10 VITAE. SVINNE 'KA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1924 HOME WIRING SALIENT ITEM Efficient Wiring Reduces Light Bills Most new houses today are planned with a view to having electricity. It is undoubtedly true, however, that the owner is frequently not familiar with the many modern applications of electricity for labor saving and comfort, and. thinks of it only in con- nection with lighting purposes for which it was first used. This results in insufficient outlets and awkwardly placed: switches, and it is only after he is living in the house that these errors become ap- parent. As always, the making of changes or additions is then a more troublesome and expensive proceeding than correct foresight and provision in the first place would have cost. Perhaps no one thing has more completely revolutionized modern life than the application of electricity to our daily problems. The difference between the dim, flickering candle of our grandfathers, and the steady, cheerful light of the electric bulb is but one example. And just as one push of a button will do the work that was once performed by the time- consuming operation of lighting a candle, caring for its drippings and replacing it at brief intervals, so, too, has electricity been made available as an ever-ready servant--swift, untir- ing, efficient, willing, in every depart- ment of the household. Whether it be cooking, cleaning, lighting, heat- ing, electricity can do it more quickly, more safely, more simply than it could otherwise be accomplished. Efficient Wiring Reduces Bills A common misunderstanding exists in the feeling that the possession of numerous outlets for electric current increases the cost of current con- sumed. But the fact that the house is properly wired for future use of labor-saving devices does not in any way affect the monthly bill. Elec- tricity is only charged for when it is consumed. It is only consumed when current runs through the wires. Outlets themselves cost only their value as wire when they are orig- and this cost is trifl- inally installed, ing. afiv elegtrical appliances are them- pene. in the buying, and » cost of unkee that ey ively reasonable to iter more and more of them from time to time opportutliy ours and Share the benefits of their constant use. : The weekly cost of electric power in the average family is about 50 cents. Candles Can be Secured In Interesting Variety Candles are made from wax, paraffin, tallow, palm oil and various other sub- stances. They are etiher dipped, rolled 'or molded in order to form the desired size and shape. Candles were made by dipping long _before the molding process was invent- ed. The wicks which hang from a sup- porting rod are dipped into a large vat, containing the melted substance. The saturated wicks are then cooled and again dipped and cooled, repeating the process until the desired size is obtained. These candles resemble the bayberry} candle and may be colored any desired shade. True bayberry candle comes only in the characteristic greenish shade. Bayberry candles are made from a wax which forms the outside coating on the berries of the bayberry tree. These trees grow in various parts of the United 'States. This wax must be boiled, and strained before it can be used candles. There is another kind known as the pine .cone and corn candles which are examples of fancy molded candles. Af- ter removing from the molds the wax is colored in a characterist.c manner. The [talian antique is also a molded candle, the peculiar coloring being the result of mixing colored wax to give the appear- ance of age. EEAUTIFY UGLY FLOOR WITH GOOD LINOLEUM An old splintery floor is certainly not very conducive to peace of mind, when the floor is in a bedroom and you are accustomed to walking around a great deal in your bare feet. Of course boudoir slippers are supposed to be worn upon the occasions of robing and disrobing, but they some- how are very often misplaced or are not within arm's reach, so that you are forever unconsiously jeopardizing your comfort and inviting the possibility of I poisoning by tramping around blcod clarified for the old boards. With children and especially babies in the house the un- desirability of old floors is tenfold increased. It would be wonderful wouldn't it, if every one of us could have a brand new house with brand new hardwood floors in it? But very often we can't even have new floors built into our old houses, and so we need to be re- minded that linoleum covering is the very best way to hide the old enes. You can have a mighty attractive and permanent floor if you use the genu- ine lineoleum, not one of the substi- tutes. and have it laid properly by an expert from the reputable store where you bought it. There are linoleums in plain colorings and other neat patterns which are appropriate and also very artistic for vour bedroom. and which form a splendid background for one or two inexpensive rugs. Think of the sanitation which you then would have and also the peace of mind. When waxed occasionally, the genuine lineolum practically never wears out. AMERICAN MADE RUGS Yankee ingenuity has caused Amer- ican manufacturers to duplicate, through human-like machinery, many of the handsomest of handwrought patterns found in oriental rugs of great value. The rugs are produced in domestic brussels and velvets, af- fording excellent floor cov erings. Such gory more regula more per fase Yer flatter on the floor. rug fect I. Plan to Radiocast Real Stories by Little Tots Miss Frances Cutler of 347 Hazel avenue, Highland Park, will tell stories over the Tribune radio (W.G.N.) dur- ing Skeezix Hour, 5:30 to 6 o'clock, Saturday afternoon, October 25, when the program will again be under the direction of the National Kinder- garten and Elementary college. BUILDS $28,000 HOME R. L. Hurlburt was granted a per- mit by the Village of Kenilworth, this week, to build a residence at 310 Raleigh road to cost $28,000. Aurelio Coccia, well known on the vaudeville stage in this country and in Europe as the originator of the Apache dance, has been signed by Allan Dwan for a role in "Argentine Love," featuring Bebe Daniels and Ricardo Cortez. HERE'S TIMELY HINT FOR THE NEWLYWEDS "--and we do solemnly set aside something in budget that will bring our lives." If every bride and groom would make this silent vow, realizing the great impetus toward continued hap- piness afforded by a common interest in the beautiful, then any investment in beautifying the home would have returns in married contentment and harmony. Pictures promise to our yearly beauty into represent art in its most! delightful form. They do more than any one thing in a room to bring into it color and interest and loveliness. They help to make of the home a place that is pleasing to come back to. Pictures well chosen improve, the ap- pearance of the furniture, the draperies and the rugs in a house, and thus make it the more livable. As the life of the spirit is more portant to happiness than material life, so there should be a definite sum set aside each year for developing this finer side, and pictures should be among the regular purchases of the family. im- the same vorded undue costs.
