"The complaint that young peo- ple are not what they used to be is almost as old as civilization," said Mrs. Langworthy. "In 1875 the magazines and periodicals were bewailing the fact that the young people had no morals and no manners, and in 1850 the magazines were moaning over the fact that the rising generation had no manners and no morals." Standards Lacking "The only trouble with the manners and morals of the young people is that they have no standards. We set very definite standards for the pro- fessional and business training of our young people but in matters of man- ners and morals they are not brought up--they 'jes' grow." They wear whatever is stylish whether it is suit- able or not. They read what they please or what they hear talked about, whether it is good mental food, trash or rank poison. Their manners are casual, and they never observe or consult people who know, or books which might aid them." In giving a standard for dress Mrs. Langworthy suggested three points-- Modesty (and no dress which calls at- tention to the body instead of to the wearer can be called modest), suitabil- ity and becomingness. Manners Come from Heart "Manners must evolve from the heart," said Mrs. Langworthy, but she indicated that head work was also necessary. 'Although there are many good, kind people whose manners, par- ticularly table manners, are perfect- ly atrocious, and although these may be excused in people who have no opportunity to learn better, they are not excusable in people whose educa- tion and contact with others gives them the opportunity to learn to do the right thing at the right time. Scores Cheap Movies According to Mrs. Langworthy, the apparent lack of morals is often a superficial thing due to the less con- ventional forms of living in these days. However she feels that there are two real menaces to the morals of the young people--cheap, uncensored movies and more insidious still, cheap, sen- sational magazines. "Of course," said Mrs. Langworthy in conclusion, "you may say that it is your own affair what you read, and what you wear, and you are perfectly right. It is entirely up to you te choose what you want to become, but it is also your affair to see clearly, to set your standards and to live up to them." FIVE WINNETKA WOMEN ON CHAMP HOCKEY TEAM The game between the United States Field Hockey team and the All-Chicago Field Hockey team should be of special interest to Winnetkans, for, of the eleven chosen for the All-Chicago team, five are from Winnetka--Miss Dorothy Klotz, Miss Peggy Waidner, Miss Mar- garet De Lay, Mrs. Paul Starr and Mrs. Henry Tenney. An All-Chicago Reserve Present Day" was the topic on which team has also been chosen, and four of Mrs. B. F. l,angworthy of Winnetka, ! these are from Winnetka--Mrs. Preston Boyden, Mrs. Sebastian Hinton, Mrs. Walter Fisher, and Mrs. Robert Brown. The game will be called at 3 o'clock on Sunday, November 9, in the new Grant Park stadium. It will be a fine exhibition of the game which is becom- ing so popular around Chicago. It is hoped that the All-Chicago team will show the result of the excellent coaching given it by the English coach, Miss Warner. The Winnetka Hockey team has played three games so far, two with the Coun- try Day school, winning the first, 7-3, and tying the second, 3-3, the latter game being called because of darkness. Last Thursday the Winnetkans defeated the Evanston team, 15-1. The Winnetka Hockey team is com- posed of the following: Miss Dorothy Klotz, Miss Peggy Waidner, Mrs. Se- bastian Hinton, Mrs. Dow Harvey, Miss Margaret De Lay, Mrs. Preston Boyden, Mrs. Walter Fisher, Mrs. Robert Brown, Miss Helen Davis, Mrs. Robert Matz, Mrs. Henry Tenney, Mrs. Emmons Blaine, Jr. Mrs. Fred Chapman. A strong second team is rapidly developing. If You Like to Sing The Chorus Wants You When you first get up in the morn- ing do you sing? Do you sing while vou're washing the dishes? While car- rying out the ashes? If you do sing at these critical times then you are cordially invited to be present at the next meeting of the Winnetka Choral society. Be at the Woman's Clubhouse on this coming Tuesday evening, No- vember 11, at 7:30 o'clock. The leader of the chorus is Noble Cain, the musician who prepared and presented such an interesting concert program last spring. He is planning to have the society give another and even better concert at the end of this present season. The songs that he has selected are announced as both popular and of genuine musicale value and the singing of them is recommended to give pleasure and profit to those who hear and those who participate. The committee in charge of the en- ¢erprise is looking forward to a very successful year. The Willow Street circle meets Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Allen Roth, 511 Willow road. Following the morning meeting which commences at 11:30 o'clock, there will be luncheon and a program. a ---- The next meeting of the Foxdale Avenue circle will be held on Tues- day, November 11, at the home of Mrs. Ralph Morphett of 964 Tower road.
