16 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1924 WINNETKAN HAS "NEW SKID CHAIN Invents Unique Time-Saving Device Patents for an improved type of skid chain for automobiles have recently heen obtained by I. J. Alexander du Rees, 1040 Oak street . Mr. du Rees has worked for sixteen years on his in- vention and much of that work has been done in Winnetka. | The new chains are designed to elimi- nate the flapping of broken chains against fenders and to facilitate replace- ments. The cross chains which go over the tire and afford traction" for the wheel are fastened to the chain which circles the rim by a double hook ar- rangement, which is so designed that when the cross chain breaks, or is worn through, (which frequently happens) the hooks open, leaving the remainder "of the cross chain on the road. These cross chains may be bought for half the price of similar parts on other makes of chains, it is said, and may be put on without tools by simply closing the two hooks, which operate like the two arms of a pair of scissors. This method" of repair is simple and clean, and may be done by a woman without trouble. Mr. du Rees says that the chains have been tried out by several big taxicab companies in Chicago and that some of these companies will make them standard equipment on their machines. He also stated that they had been tried out by the police and fire departments of the city and may be used by them, also. Tests at the Lewis and Armour In- stitutes, according. to Mr. du Rees, showed that his chains and in particular the hooks, which are the most important part of the invention, were able to sus- tain more than fifteen hundred pounds more weight than any other chain on Telephone 1098 ALEC W.
