Mr. Morphett knew Sir George Williams personally, and so was able to give a vivid picture of this kindly and charming man. Sir George was a country boy and came to London when only 14 years of age. He apprenticed himself to a busi- ness house there, and after many year's service became the head of the firm. During his first years of work, how- ever, when he had very long hours and very little pay, he felt the need of recreation and formed a club of other boys like himself. This club gradually became larger, and when Sir George became the head of the firm, he estab- lished it in rooms of its own. Before long other influential men became in- terested, and in 1844 the Y. M. C. A. was founded. It has since spread all over the world but its main aims re- main the same as those given it by the founder.
