Particularly impres- sive were the settings employed for the nine scenes, each giving evidence of much care and study. Care also was used in the voices employed for the various songs and while on the subject it might be well to correct the impression that these singers were im- ported professionals. Those who have followed the Theatre Guild carefully were quick to recognize that these were north shore people; others, how- ever, pointed to the program as proof of their contention that they were con- cert artists drafted for the occasion. The story of the Duenna, who poses as Louisa that the latter may fly to the man of her choice, contains many op- portunities for comedy moments and Mr. J. W. Macy and Mrs. John Mar- shall were quick to take advantage of most of them. Unusually excellent was Mr. Macy's performance and his Horne & Johnson House Lighting, Power Installation, Repairing, Etc. Evanston Wil. 3381 1045 Wesley Ave, Univ. 1212 of this, it proved to be a finished per- formance in its major moments and I know of no amateur company capable of surpassing the efforts of this group. Mrs. Gilbert Smith of Evanston was one of the out-standing singers and Dr. Davies Lazear was particularly effective in at least six of the songs. Mr. Nicholas Zaichenko, new to the Guild, surprised and delighted the au- dience with his powerful voice and his knowledge of dramatic work. Add to this trio, Mrs. Dennis Gent and you have a remarkable quartet. The bal- ance of the large cast did about as well as could be expected, each trying faithfully to interpret the characters assigned. There was much good danc- ing and an effective scene in which eight nuns participated. Nor should one overlook the music provided by Mr. Isaac Van Grove and his Sym- phonic octette of Chicago. Presenting the "Duenna" involved much time and effort, more perhaps than the casual observer might imag- ine and the production was doubtless the most expensive to produce of any the Guild has attempted. Apparently it was appreciated as well it might be. Mrs. Sherman Goble, 511 Ash street, gave a tea Friday, March 5, from 3 un- til 6 o'clock, in honor of her new daughter-in-law, Mrs. Paul Goble. The Paul Gobles, are residing in Evanston at present. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Rush Butler of Locust road are stopping at the Green Brier hotel at White Sulphur Spring for a short time.
