Railroad Jack, Mental Gymnast, Invades Village "Railroad Jack," who says he was baptized Harry D. Cooper--and he has a wonderful memory for those things-- is the latest acquisition to the north shore. Mr. Cooper, or "Railroad Jack," as we may more informally refer to him, is living on the strip of county iand near the Shack, on Sheridan road. He announces that he will make the north shore his permanent home. Now this is an announcement of no small moment, we would have you know, for Railroad Jack is the only one of his kind in the world. He is the only animated model of the Encyclo- pedia Britannica in existence. In other and simpler words, he is a memory ex- pert of the first water, and he special- | izes on history. Railroad Jack confidently invites one to mention the name of any man--or | woman--in history or literature. One | might, for instance, mention the name of Atilla, the Hun, as we did, thinking to stump the memory wizard. Without a moment's hesitation, however, Jack informed us that Atilla the Hun lived in the fourth century A D. (or was it B. C.?), that he was called the "Scourge of Europe," and other con- ceivably careful and certainly interest- ing information about Atilla. What Jack didn't know about Wil- liam Gladstone, once prime minister of England, and his predecessor, Benny Disraeli, could be printed in 48-point Cooper on a fly's right knee-cap. But for a demonstration of really an ex- haustive amount of information one al families of Europe. That man can tell in a few nicely condensed volumes should ask him about scions of the roy- the exact relationship between King Haakon of Norway and George M. Co- han. He has demonstrated his mental prowess all over the country--in fact, he makes a business of it. Among the local places at which he has spoken are Northwestern university and New Trier High school. He says that he took up the business of remembering things be- cause there is no competition in that field, He further asserts that his ex- pertness in this line did not come nat- urally, but was developed by extensive work and study. Jack is a man of parts and of educa- tion. In fact, almost anyone would ad- mit that he had the major part of an excellent education. As a matter of fact he attended the Oshkosh Normal school in the eighties (before the 'B'Gosh' was added) and also attended the Rush Medical college shortly after- wards. In his time he has been a news- paper man, he says, but we don't hold that against him. He believes in living the simple life, it being his policy to sleep out-of-doors | each and every night in the year and to subsist for a whole day on that amount of groceries which can be pur- | chased for one lone dollar. His nick- name is what stumns us, for walking is his principal method of locomotion. Schmidt Booster Club Holds Meeting Tuesday The Oscar W.
