N. McConnell, Jr, 507 Lake avenue,) Wilmette, are members of the mid- year class of thirty-six students en- rolled in the National Kindergarten and Elementary college this semester. One of the most interesting mem- bers of the class is Miss Elizabeth Clarke of Bulgaria, head of the Ameri- can Kindergarten and Elementary school, Sophia. The school originated in a kindergarten opened in 1900 by Miss Clarke under the American Board of Foreign Missions of the Congre- gational church, in an effort to bring the benefits of modern education to the children of Bulgaria. Through Miss Clarke's indomitable perseverance the school has grown to include the elementary grades and a training school for kindergarten and elementary teachers, graduates of which are given the highest recognition by the Bul- garian government. The kindergarten building, planned for fifty children, is now accommodat- ing eighty in the kindergarten and an equal number in the grades, together with the students in the training school. The city has made a grant of land for a new school, the government has donated wood, and funds have been secured to partially complete the building. Construction is now under way for a much larger social center or "Community Fireside" as it is called there, which will include, in addition to the school, a health center for the chil- dren, cafeteria, domestic science de- partment, residence for the missionary and assistant and a hostel on the up- Excellence HE FACT that every- thing that is served to you at the Central Cafeteria is so supremely good is not a matter of chance. Miss Clarke was born in Bulgaria, but received her education in America at Mt. Holyoke, Symonds Kindergarten Training School and the National Kindergarten and Elementary college. Miss Clarke is in America on a year's furlough and expects to visit schools in the East and to attend Columbia university this summer. Miss Penka Kassabova, a graduate of the Ameri- can training school in Sophia, is also attending the National Kindergarten and Elementary college this year, and will return to Sophia after finishing her course here. Mr. and Mrs. Frederick W. Cope- land of 1082 Spruce street are sailing for Europe Saturday, March 6. Their baby son, Frederick, will stay in Chi- cago with Mrs. Copeland's mother, Mrs. Packard, for two months and with his grandmother, Mrs. F. K. Cope- land, for the month of May. On Mrs. C. T. Northrop of 1144 North avenue has been ill for two weeks and is still confined to her home. LEAVING FOR CRUISE Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Buck of Scott avenue are leaving for New Orleans Monday, March 8. From that city they will take the steamer for a cruise to Honduras, stopping en route at Havana, Panama, and various points of interest along the Central American coast. They expect to be away about a month. Helen Fulton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank D.
