March 20, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 11 CITY OF MANY HILLS That's Lynchburg, Va., Says Dr. A. K. Parker Who Has Been Wintering There North Shore friends of Dr. A. K. Parker, for many years pastor of the Centennial Baptist church of Chicago, and trustee of the University of Chi- cago, will be pleased to read the fol- lowing extracts from a letter written by him to P. B. Kohlsaat of Winnetka. The letter is written from Lynchburg, Va., where Dr. Parker is staying for the winter. "Your very welcome letter is entitled to an answer, even if that an- swer is not 'written for publication.' This is not saying, however, that old friends should not claim whatever good news of me you happen to have at hand. "Don't think meanly of a city like Lynchburg of 40,000 people. I don't myself like the hills on which it is built, but I am not obliged to climb them, for there are streets enough that are fairly on the level, Church street, for example, on which I am living and Main street. All the same, I give a start still when I see a car make a sudden turn and plunge down hill. Nine times out of ten, too, the driver of this adventurous car is a young woman and more than once I have been a passenger. Some streets, not many it is true, are not even attempted by wagons or cars. From my windows I see a paved street climbing the hill which only pedestrians undertake, and it is furnished for this with a long succession of short flights of stairs. My acquaintance with it is slight; I know it only by sight; but I look with envy at the boys and girls who skip cheerily up and down this declivity. The 'best people,' of course, live on hills. "And the churches, too, are on the hills. They are large and well built. The congregations are large. Many, very many men are church-goers. But I find that in the Baptist churches, at least, (there are seven of them). Ser- mons are not preached, but messages are delivered,' authoritative and ortho- dox, of course. "Lynchburg is a city of colleges as well as of churches. Randolph Macon College for women (Methodist), has nearly a thousand students. I went there last evening to attend Founder's Day exercises and heard an address by Senator Borah, introduced by Senator Glass, of whom Lynchburg, his native city, is very proud. The procession with w hich the program opened was togged out in academic gowns and hoods and caps. Randolph Macon has very good buildings and a very good reputation. Then comes Sweet Briar college for women (Episcopal), somewhat smaller and _ aristocratic. It owes its sweet pretty name to the expressed desire of its founders. And lastly, Lynchburg college for men and women (Disciples). The women have their rights you see. Church control is recognized in all these colleges. And Southern churches I suspect are in general very conserva- tive in doctrine. "I don't forget my old friends. As- sure them of that fact. It is good to be reminded that I am not forgotten." Affectionately, A. K. Parker. D. A. R.
