Most of the cases appear to be mild, although some are quite severe. While the infection has not demonstrated the extremely {fatal nature that prevailed in 1918, still there is active danger of pneumonia compli- cations, according to Dr. Issac D. Raw- lings, state health commissioner. Prevalence of respiratory infections, variously diagnosed as influenza, la grippe, severe colds and intestinal flu appears to be more general than for several years. These diseases are all closely related, highly communicable and capable of terminating in pneumo- nia. They are spread from one to an- other by contact and by careless sneez- ing, coughing, spitting and any other practice that is liable to carry dis- charges from the nose and throat to other people. Precaution against influenza and the other respiratory infections now pre- valent include rigid personal cleanli- ness, complete isolation of the sick and maintenance of maximum bodily and physical resistance. The latter depends considerably upon avoiding exposure to wet and cold, avoiding undue fatigue from dissipation, work or play and eat- ing plenty of nourishing, easily digested food. Sleep is an important factor in keeping fit. Influenza patients should go to bed both for their own good and that of others. Complete rest not only hastens recovery but it helps materially in pre- venting such grave complications as pneumonia. Participating in physical exercises use up the energy and strength that the patient needs for combatting the disease.
