The splendid ensemble program last Sunday afternoon by the Instrument- al Sextet of the Little Symphony Or- chestra of Chicago closed the series of summer afternoon musicales at the Skokie club. These musicales, four in all, have been under the direction of Mrs. Dwight C. Orcutt, who is to be congratulated upon having secured: artists of such high standard. The musicales have been enthusiastically supported, and each time there was a capacity attendance,--which proves their success. The Instrumental Sextet demon- strated last Sunday its superiority over other instrumental sextets or trios. It plays unconducted, except for an oc- casional nod or gesture from the vio: linist, Herman Felber, Jr. Karl Schul- te, played a violin, Theodore du Mou- lin a violincello, Emil Eck a flute, and Angelo de Caprio the clarinet. Miss Helene Brahm was at the piano, play- ing in perfect accord with the sextet. The program opened with that brisk, exhilirating march by Chabrier, "Marche Joyeuse," and then went on into the overture from "The Secret of Suzanne," which was very well liked. Attacks were prompt and vig- orous, and the interpretation good. Lalo's Andante from "Symphonie Es- pagnole" moved with a sombre beauty, and the melody solos played by Mr. Felber were lovely. Victor Herbert's "Badinage" was the gayest bit of co- quetry we've heard in a long time. The sextet took little liberties with the tempo and added a lot of spice to it. Herbert's "L'Encore" for flute and clarinet had a good swing, and the sextet was in absolute control of it at all times. Debussy's Fantasia, "Pelleas et Meli- sande" was an exquisite bit of melan- choly tenderness. Selections from the Suite, "Trianon" showed good work and a real feeling. Two of Jarnefelt's works, "Berceuse" and "Prelude" were clear and very charming. The program closed with the dramatic "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2," by Liszt, which was played in an excellent manner. Railway Choral Club Is Entertained in Wilmette Mrs. Lester Morse of Maple avenue, Wilmette, extended the hospitality of her home and grounds to the Chicago and North Western Railway Choral club, Saturday evening. A three course dinner was served on the spacious lawn at 6 o'clock. Forty- six members enjoyed a lively evening with vocal, piano and ukelele music. Harry Slater, foreman of machinists at the Chicago shops, is the conductor of the Choral club. Mr. and Mrs. Orval Simpson of Au- burn road entertained a few of their friends at dinner and bridge last Sat- urday evening. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Morton Maddox and family, 705 Oak street, have returned to Winnetka after spending a month at Sturgeon Bay, Wis. Mrs. Arthur Cable of Sheridan road, Glencoe, accompanied by her eldest son, Peter, left for New York last week and sailed September 1 on the DeGrasse for a three-week visit with relatives in Paris.
