"JUDITH" IN AMERICAN PREMIERE AT CHICAGO Mary Garden to Sing Title Role in Piece January 17; Opera Season in Final weeks The repertoire for the last two weeks of the Civic Opera at the Chicago Auditorium, which will bring the sea- son to a close, has been announced. Starting off with the long-promised American premiere of "Judith," which is the most eagerly awaited operatc novelty that America has been promis- ed in many years, the fortnight will contain repetitions of "Don Giovanni" and other great successes of the earlier weeks, and single performances of "Madame Butterfly," "Faust," "Gianni Schicchi," "Hansel and Gretel," "Boris Godunoff" and "I'he Masked Ball." Saturday night "Tiefland" will be re- peated at popular prices, in English, with the same cast that introduced it to the repertoire--Elsa Alsen, Forrest Lamont and Giacomo Rimini; Weber conducting. Sunday matinee, January 16, the sea- son's last performance of "The Jewess" will be given, with Rosa Raisa, Eide Norena, Charles Marshall, Alexander Kipnis, Jose Mojica; Serge Oukrainsky and ballet; Weber conducting. Garden in Title Role Monday evening, January 17, the American premier of Honegger's opera, "Judith," will be given, with Mary Garden in the title role, and Clara Shear, Cesare Formichi and Edouard Cotrouil; Polacco conducting. Follow- ed by Puccini's short opera, "Gianni Schicchi," with Eide Norena, Lorna Doone Jackson, Charles Hackett, Gia- como Rimini, Virgilio Lazzari and Vit- torio Trevisan; Moranzoni conducting. Tuesday evening, January 18, "La Cena delle Beffe" will be repeated with Claudia Muzio, Eide Norena, Lorna Doone Jackson, Irene Pavloska, Anna Hamlin, Antonio Cortis, Theodore Ritch, Luigi Montesanto and Virigilio Lazzari; Polacco conducting. Saturday matinee, "Il Trovotore" will be repeated with Louise Loring, Au- gusta Lenska, Aroldo Lindi and Rich- ard Bonelli; Weber conducting. Saturday evening a double bill will be given at popular prices, "Cavalleria Rusticana," with Claudia Muzio, Lorna Doone Jackson, Forrest Lamont and Desire Defrere : Moranzoni conducting. Followed by "T'Pagliacci," with Eide Norena, Antonio Cortis and Cesare Formichi; Weber conducting. Sunday at 2 o'clock will be given the season's only performance of "Hansel and Gretel" in English, for the benefit of juvenile music lovess, responsive to hundreds of requests. Irene Pavolska, Clara Shear, Anna Hamlin, Florence Misgen, Maria Claes- sens and Desire Defrere will constitute the cast. The opera will be followed by the ballet in "The Elements"; Frank St. Leger conducting. Monday evening the last perform- ince of "Don Giovanni" will be given with the same cast as before except that Charles Hackett will sing Don Ot- tavio. Kurenka in Debut Tuesday evening the famous Russian coloratura soprano, Maria Kurenka, will make her debut with the company in "The Barber of Seville" with Maria Claessens, Charles Hackett, Richard Bonelli, Virgilio Lazzari and Vittorio Trevisan: Moranzoni conducting. Wednesday at 2, "Carmen" will be given as the last of the mid-week mati- nees at popular prices, with Mary Garden, Eide Norena, Fernand Ans- seau, Giacomo Rimini, Edouard Cot- reuil ; ballet; Polacco conducting.
