Yet, that is the job a special committee of the General Alumni association of Northwestern university is undertaking. The committee wants nothing more or less than a substitute for "Go- U-Northwestern" or "Rise North- western," both of which are called ex- cellent university hymns, with a foot- ball flavor, but not exactly a regula- tion or simon-pure university song- poem. The General Alumni associa- tion has just announced a prize of $200 "for the best song-poem and a prize of $300 for the best musical setting for such song poem." The official organ of the alumni as- sociation says: "It is the hope of the committee that many song-lyrics will be submitted, for out of a great num- ber one may prove to be just suited to the purpose and suggest to a com- poser a musical setting of the first order. While it is hoped that some of the literati among alumni and friends of the university will submit songs, yet amateurs should not hesitate to compete. What is sought is a song not to be sung by highbrows only, but by college folks generally. Preference will be given to a song that does not stress athletics. What is wanted is some good Alma Mater songs." Mr. and Mrs. Fred I. Ballard of Philadelphia, Pa., and Mr. and Mrs. William W. Collin, Jr., of Pittsburgh, Pa., are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Er- nest Ballard of 811 Auburn road.
