May 14, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 19 EXPECT 663 STUDENTS AT SUMMER SESSIONS Indicate Enthusiastic Interest in Courses Offered During Vaca- tion Time at New Trier By WESLEY L. BROWN (Director of Research and Principal of New Trier Summer School) Enrollment of 663 students is ex- pected in the New Trier High school summer session this summer, accord- ing to school authorities. This is based on the fact that last summer's enroll- ment of 617 students was 45 percent of the enrollment of the regular school year just preceding that summer school. If the same ratio holds for this summer, one can take 45 percent of this year's October enrollment of 1,468, which gives an estimate of 663 students for this year's summer school. The summer school opens June 20 and continues until August 12, When it is considered that 45 per- cent of the student body is attending summer school despite the counter at- tractions of summer camps, travel and sports, one realizes the immense popu- larity of this New Trier institution. Probably this is partly due to the fact that the north shore itself is one of the world's finest summer resorts. Attend by Preference I was very much struck by the fact that a large portion of last year's sum- mer school students were here not be- cause they had to be, but because they wanted to be. Many were vacationing at home during the early summer months, and were taking full advantage of the opportunities offered by the lake, tennis courts, golf clubs and other recreative facilities of the north shore. These things did not fill their entire time, and consequently, of their own volition, they added summer school in the morning to their vacation program. Many of these students planned to take trips to other parts of the country during the thirty days between summer school and the opening of the fall semester. Some other reasons for attendance at summer school are the following : Secure Entrance Units Several seniors had changed their selection of colleges at the last minute, and found that they did not have exactly the right entrance units. They were very glad to take advantage of our summer school to complete re- quirements. A great many juniors were afraid that they would not have quite enough credits and points for graduation at the end of the next year, and to insure Save Your Dream Give It Endurance in Brick and Mortar. Other students found that, to go on with their grade and adviser room, they must go to summer school. Still others had passed some important work with rather low grades, and in order to bet- ter their foundation in this course, were reviewing it in summer school. Form of Insurance I found that many students looked on summer school credit as business men look on insurance. They reason that they may at some time in their high school course be unable to complete a full semester's work, due to sickness or travel or other irregularities. Conse- quently, they accumulate some credit in summer school in order to make it possible for them to graduate on time even though some such unforseen con- tingency should occur. There was also a group of students who were taking courses during the regular year which were very closely prescribed, and who wanted to take some elective subjects not included in these courses. Their only opportunity to do this was to take a fifth year at New Trier, or to attend summer school. Cansequently, the summer session found them at work in New Trier. Summer school classes are scheduled in the morning during the cool part of the day, leaving the warm afternoon open for recreation. Most people feel that students should have some vaca- tion in the summer, and consequently summer school is arranged to close one full month before the beginning of the fall term to allow the students a com- plete cessation of academic activity. . Since the people of the north shore in increasing numbers are recognizing the advantages of summer school, it is quite possible that this estimate of 663 students for the 1927 summer school will be too low.
