Three performances were given, and all played to large and enthusiastic audiences. Beginning with t h e singing of "Twenty Lovesick Maidens" by these picturesquely garbed maidens, through the effective finale in modern sports clothes, the production was very well done. Particularly well liked by the audience were the songs "He Was a Little Boy," sung by Lady Angela and Patience, the fable of "I'he Magnet and the Churn," sung by Archibald and the girls, and "Sing Hey to You," given by Reginald and Lady Jane, who sup» plied a good part of the humor of the opera. The leads were taken by different people, at the various performances. Jane Sutherland made a most charm- ing Patience, at the Saturday perform- ance. Kenneth McKown was Archi- bald, the self-styled "all right." His was one of the best voices in the pro- duction. The other poet, Reginald, be- loved of the "rapturous maidens," was given by Dennison Groves. Regin- ald's solicitor helped with the humor of the play. Dorothy Gerhard was the humorous Jane. Betty Fulton made an exquisite little Lady Saphir. Nancy Wilder, as Lady Ella, sang beautifully, as did Doris Ferry, who was a stately Lady Angela. The three officers of the Dragoon Guards provided a great deal of humor and sang exceptionally well. The dragoons themselves sang well and drilled excellently. Their red uniforms were most effective against the modernistic settings, which had been painted by the Art and Shop classes. The programs deserve particular mention. The cover was decorated with a sketch suggestive of Aubrey Beardsley, while inside was reproduced the original program of the opera. Around the edges are grouped the chorus girls of 1881, together with a bashful, hour-glass figured Patience and other girls, with one lone dragoon. Two parents of pupils in the school arranged for the music, which was given by members of the Chicago Symphony orchestra. Suggests Light System for Highways of County A new system of lighting the high- ways leading to the towns of Cook county of sufficient intensity to provide a clear vision for the motorist at least 100 feet in front of his machine is urged by R. K. Malcolmson, chairman of the Street and Highway committee of the National Electric Light associa- tion. "Highway lighting is an economic necessity," said Mr. Malcolmson. "It, is of especial importance to the towns of Cook county in which the main arteries of automobile travel leading to these suburban villages are not illum- inated as they should be for the safety of the motorist, and as a matter of suburban attractiveness which would bring more people to these towns. Each day the electric railways in 1ili- nois carry 2% times as many pas- sengers as there were United States troops transported to France during the World War. Telephone Wilmette 2847 DR. FRANK B.
