May 28, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 11 Independent Judges Are Given O. K. of Civic Leaders Here The situation presented in the com ing judicial election has aroused the intense interest of Evanston leaders. Through a combination of political bosses in Chicago the names of Judge Oscar M. Torrison of Evanston, Judges Charles M. Thomson of Winnetka and Frank Johnston, Jr. have been elim- inated from the coalition ticket al- though they are rated high by the vote of the Bar association. They are running on an independent ticket. The following endorsement of the three comes from Harry Eugene Kelly, prominent attorney. I earnestly recommend the re-election of Oscar M. Torrison, Charles M. Thomson and Frank Johnston, Jr., as circuit judges at the forthcoming judicial election in Cook County. They are sitting judges and ought to have been included with the other sitting judges on the coalition tic- ket. They have rendered independent, honorable and able judicial service to the people of Cook County for many years. They have the strong indorsement of the Chicago Bar association on their merits. It is now proposed to substitute for them candidates who have had no judicial ex- perience and who have no just claim to their places on the bench. The people, if they understand the iniquity of the real situation, will undoubtedly resent it by re-electing these judges, because the peo- ple are manifestly in favor of retaining the judges who have given faithful serv- ice. They are compelled to seek their re-election on an independent ticket, and thus to be placed in an unfavorable posi- tion on the ballot; so that special effort must be made by the friends of an in- dependent judiciary to see that their merits are called to the attention of the voters. I trust that they will be found among those sitting judges winning the distinction and approbation of re-elec- tion." --Harry Eugene Kelly Mrs. William Grenacre, formerly of | Winnetka, but now of Minneapolis, spent a few days this week with Mrs. | Lyman Weld of 983 Vine street. gar gn -- IE - 0 | ll, == Maytag washes faster than any other home laundry unit.
