Mr. von Hofsten is bring- ing back with him collection of water colors and sketches he has painted during the winter and which will be on exhibition in the Camp Fire Girls' room at Winnetka Community House, from May 29 to June 12. The water colors include scenes at the Grand Canyon, Pasadena, Mt. Wil- son and the San Bernardino range, the Ojai Valley, the Bell Ringers' Garden at the San Juan Capistrano Mission, the Pacific ocean from Balboa, the Torrey Pines, Carmel-by-the-sea, the Imperial Valley, and the Mojave Desert in bloom. This is Mr. von Hofsten's first trip to the West coast and he has written back to Winnetka that he had been at first overwhelmed by all the colors and sunlight and then had painted dili- gently to catch it with his brush. The flowers in the desert this spring have been more impressive than for forty years, Mr. von Hofsten writes, because of the unusually heavy rainfall. He describes a trip into the desert with other artists, as follows: "For hours, six thousand feet up on a ridge overlooking immense moun- tains and valleys on either side. Then we came down suddenly into the Mo-~ jave Desert--in the foreground forty square miles of flowers, blue, purple, vellow and maroon. The colors go on so far that you see no horizon, disap- pearing in a soft gray, with the snow- colored mountains faintly showing through." Mr. von Hofsten's friends on the north shore have been interested to see how he has reacted to this new setting, startlingly different from the locale of his landscapes of former vears--the Skokie valley, the Moun- tains in Switzerland and Winter in Sweden.
