July 23, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 5 ; 11 ; of Indian Hill, but in this round Mrs. 5 Virginia Van Wie Pardue fell before the onslaught of ---- ay Keeps Title; Beats Miss Morse, 4 and 3 By RAY C. PEARSON Playing a sterling brand of golf, sometimes at par figure and always very close to it, Miss Virginia Van Wie of Beverly, repeating her tri- umph of last vear, defeated Miss Jo- sephine Morse of South Shore and Midlothian in a stubbornly contested final of the Western Women's Golf association's city championship at North Shore late last week. The margin at the finish was 4 and 3. Five hundred formed the gallery following the match. Miss Van Wie probably never played better golf than she displayed in defeating Miss Morse. Steadiness was her middle name and this is evi- denced by the fact that never once was she in real trouble. Her driving was pretty and the same could be said of her work on the greens. On the other hand Miss Morse seemed to be a trifle nervous at the start. On the first nine she had no less than three sixes, which enabled Miss Van Wie to be 2 up at the turn. Coming in they halved the tenth, Miss Van Wie won the eleventh and twelfth and then Miss Morse rallied for a re- markable display of golf. The South Shore player won the thirteenth with a birdie and at this point was three down. The fourteenth was halved and then came the fifteenth and finish of the match, when Miss Morse missed a halving putt, which spelled defeat. The championship which opened Monday produced some fine golf, and saw the elimination of several North Shore stars, among them being Mrs. C. M. Case of Illinois who lost to Miss Virginia Wilson of Onwentsia 4 and 3, and Mrs. John Arends of Wilmette who was beaten by Mrs. Austin Par- due of Indian Hill, 8 and 7. These were first round matches and in an- other Mrs. Arthur Goodman of Sun- set Ridge lost to Miss Morse, 3 and 1. EXTRA HOLE MATCHES Two extra hole matches featured the first round, one of which Mrs. Jack Vilas of Glen View defeated Mrs. C. W. Blackwell of Calumet, 1 up in |Z 19 holes. The next round, however, saw the elimination of Mrs. Vilas, Mrs. Lee W. Mida of Butterfield win- ning over her 1 up in a close match. The lone representative of the north shore section to survive to the semi- final round was Mrs. Austin Pardue SPECIAL AEE Now!
