Phone State 6348 oe -- Thomas A. Banning, Patent Attorney Is Summoned by Death Thomas A. Banning, senior member of the firm of Banning & Banning, the oldest firm of patent attorneys in Chi- cago, died at the Evanston hospital Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, follow- ing a stroke of paralysis which he suf- fered Tuesday morning of last week. For the past three years Mr. Banning, when not with his family on their estate near Robertsdale, Ala., had been living at the home of Mrs. Howard G. Hodg- kins, 602 Maple avenue, Wilmette. He had been suffering from heart trouble for the past few months, but his con- dition had not been considered alarm- ing. He was stricken Monday night of last week, and was unconscious when found by Mrs. Hodgkins the following morning. Mr. Banning was 76 years old last January. He spent the greater part of his life in Chicago, where, half a century ago, he established the patent law business which firm still bears his name. Associated with him was a son, Samuel, of Hinsdale, and a nephew, Ephraim Banning, of Winnetka. The firm has had ofiices on the sixteenth floor of the Marquette building. since its erection. Mr. Banning owned a large estate at Robertsdale, Ala., to which he was pre- paring to retire. Mrs. Banning and a daughter, Miss Esther, were at Rob- ertsdale, when they received the news of Mr. Banning's sudden illness, but arrived in Chicago before he passed away. The other members of the fam- ily are a daughter in California and a son, Thomas A. Banning, Jr. of 600 Third street, Wilmette. Mr. Banning was a member of the Congregational church, being one of the founders of the church of that de- nomination in Hyde Park. . Funeral services were conducted from Hamann!s chapel, 7008 North Clark street, Chicago, Tuesday morn- ing at 11 o'clock, following which the remains were taken to Laporte, In- diana, for burial. Car Crashes Into Tree as Driver Loses Control Last Sunday afternoon as Sam Vold and family, of 5108 South State street. Chicago, were driving their car down Hubbard hill, Mr. Vold lost control of the machine, which crashed into a tree. Both Mr. and Mrs. Vold and their two sons were cut by flying glass, their wounds requiring the at- tention of a physician. Olson negotiated this sale. F. W. Bills has negotiated the sale of the Banning home at 600 Third street, Wilmette, to J. M. Budinger, cashier of the Wilmette State bank. Chess Players Will Meet at Terrace September 8 The first regular tournament of the Wilmette section of the North Shore Chess club will be held Thursday eve- ning, September 8, at 8 o'clock in a special room at the Lake Shore Ter- race, Sheridan road and Chestnut ave- nue, which has been offered to the club for that evening by the manage- ment of the Terrace.
