EXPERT VIEWS CHILD TANTRUM AS NATURAL Edna Dean Baker Tells Parent- Teacher Group How to At- tack Behavior Problems When little Jimmy, age 4, throws a temper tantrum and refuses to go to bed at the usual hour, his rebellion is in the nature of a behavior problem, said Miss Edna Dean Baker, president of the National Kindergarten and Ele- mentary college, in an address last Monday before the Parent-Teacher association of Michigan City, Ind. "Your little Jimmy is merely reacting to certain stimuli, and not showing an outcropping of the original sin," Miss Baker told the group. "The particular reaction is undesir- able, to be sure, and the wise teacher or parent will find a way to remove the stimuli or help Jimmy to modify his reaction. This is far better than the old method of ignoring the problem as long as possible and then seeking through arbitrary punishments to bring about the desired reform or at least make the child suffer for wrong- doing." President Baker, who is a specialist in child psychology, said that parents and teachers are learning to accept these problems as natural and expect- ed, to diagnose them, taking into con- sideration the child's physical and mental condition, and the various fac- tors that enter into the situation.
