October 8, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 67 & Winnetka Exceeds 10,000 Population | Mark, Says Report According to a report submitted by Village Manager H. I. Woolhiser to the Village council Tuesday evening, Winnetka has gained four thousand in population since 1920 and now has more than the necessary 10,000 which enables it to designate "through" streets in the village and prosecute those who do not observe the injunc- tion. "Stop" signs were placed on certain streets several months ago, but there was not a general observance of them, and they were removed, until such a time as the village could "count noses" and thereby determine its status in the J matter. An ordinance passed some time ago authorized Manager Woolhiser to pro- ceed with this work. No further ac- tion was taken at the meeting Tuesday evening other than receiving the re- port and placing it on file. p- Business People : . Appeal to Council | for Wider Streets y U. C. Abel, of the Abel Battery & Ignition service who is to move, No- Ee eV EDE 1, into the building which he recently purchased at 714 Elm street, has petitioned the Village council to widen the street eight or ten feet in front of his property. A similar petition is also before the council from McGuire & Orr, relative to the street in front of their property at 576 Lincoln avenue. These petitions had been referred to the streets, drainage and forestry com- mittee, of which Trustee H. I. Raclin is chairman. The committee reported Tuesday evening that a plan for a comprehen- sive widening of both Elm street and Lincoln avenue is under active consid- eration, and will be pushed vigorously in order to give the relief specifically requested in these two petitions. A death called her one night to Clinton, Iowa. With only twenty minutes to make the nine o'clock train she hurried by taxicab to National Avenue, only to see the train leaving. She attracted the conductor's attention, however, and the train was stopped. From Racine, the conductor wired ahead for train times to Clinton. The answer was received at Kenosha, greatly relieving the customer's nervous strain. "I have never been given such attention in all the years I have travelled", says this customer in writing to the road.
