ol Mt ER tt eng. October 8, 1927 WINNETKA TALK F. E. CLERK AGREES TO REMAIN AT NEW TRIER (Continued from Page 1) along unusual lines. Most of the Parent- Teacher meetings are held at the school while the school program is in session. Parents accompany their sons and daughters to class. This plan was de- vised in order that parents might under- stand some of the conditions facing their children in their daily work at school, and to bring them in closer contact with the problems of big school organization. About 80 per cent of the {amilies rep- resented in the school have been present at these meetings. Athletic Policy--The policy in connec- tion with athletics at New Trier during the last four years has been reorganized on the basis of health, and at the present time, every student is expected to engage in some form of outdoor physical activity in accordance with his strength. Students are classified on the basis of a medical examination, and their work in this de- partment is adjusted in accordance with their ability. Less emphasis is placed on interscholastic and more emphasis on in- tramural athletics. As an example of the operation of this plan, two hundred boys are daily playing football at New Trier, getting just as much experience and health development as if they were on the first team. In this same policy, girls are included as well as boys. The central thought around which athletics are developed is health. In a recent competition among the high schools of the country, New Trier High school shared one third of a thousand dollar award for the efficiency of this health program. The award was shared with a high school in New York and one in Missouri. Employ Adviser System Adviser System--A development of the Home Room organization giving every student of the school a teacher with whom boys with a man teacher and girls with a womar teacher will be associated intimately in the capacity of adviser and advisee for the entire four years of high school. The intimate relationship thus established gives an adviser about twen- ty-five students for whom he is a close friend and counsellor, and who is defin- itely charged with the responsibility of counseling and guiding his advisees in educational, vocational, social and moral affairs. This development at New Trier is attracting wide attention throughout the country. Reduction in Per Pupil Cost--In the per pupil cost at New Trier $261.71; during the past year it $245.49. This reduction in cost has been accomplished in spite of an increase in the cost of administration expenses, in- cluding the necessary expansion of the office force to take care of the details growing out of the adviser system and the necessary expansion of the school to take care of the increasing numbers of students. 1923 was was Note Decrease in Failures Reduction of Number of Failures--In 1923 14 per cent of Freshmen failed, 12 per cent of Sophomores, 8 per cent of Juniors and 2 per cent of Seniors. In 1927 8 per cent of Freshmen failed, 8 per cent of Sophomores, 5 per cent of Juniors and 1 per cent of Seniors. (Figures for 1927 not yet available). This decrease in failures has happened during a period when the scholarship requirements have been increased. Increase in Numbers--The year ending June, 1923, average membership was 1208 students. The year ending June, 1928, the average membership on the basis of the present enrollment will be about 1625, representing an increase of 417 students or about 35 per cent. In addition to these more tangible hgures, there has been a steady im- provement in attitude and behavior on the part of the whole student body, it is pointed out. Has Valuable Contacts Mr. Clerk is a life member of the National Education association and a member of the Head Masters' associa- tion, an organization composed of one hundred of the leading preparatory school directors in the United States Through these contacts he is able to meet and exchange ideas with some of the leading educators in secondary edu- cation and is interested in any con- structive changes that may favor the best interests of the school and north shore community. He is also visiting colleges in the Fast and West in order to follow up New Trier students in their several universities, to find out if they are adequately prepared, not only for en- trance into college, but also for an in- telligent social adjustment to their work and other activities. Call for Bids October 18 on Series of Paving Jobs The paving of Edgewood lane from Greenwood avenue to Grove street and Fuclid avenue from Scott avenue to the Glencoe village limits was ad- vanced a step further toward reality, Tuesday evening, when the Village board of local improvements called for bids to be received October 18 for this work. Next Monday has been set as tag- day in Winnetka for the benefit of Chicago children. The tagging is be- ing done under the auspices of the Chicago Children's Benefit league of which Mrs. William Tucker of Evans- ton is chairman. It is hoped that Win- netka residents will purchase their tags at home before starting for the city so that the Chicago Commons may receive the money as the reciprocants of local contributions.
