a &S December 3, 1927 WINNETKA TALK NORTH SHORE GAS CO. | OPENS GIGANTIC PLANT Addition to Waukegan or Makes Possible Output of 3,500,000 Cubic Feet Daily Three and one-half million cubic feet of gas are being manufactured daily at the new water gas plant of the North Shore Gas company in Waukegan. This newest addition to the Waukegan plant was placed in a trial operation November 11, and since then has been manufacturing gas for distribution along the north shore. The new water gas plant has been equipped with the latest devices for efficiency in gas manufacture. With this plant in operation, the North Shore Gas company can expedite its service to its customers. In order to insure continuity of serv- ice, the turbine, blower, exhaustors and pumps in the new plant have all been installed in duplicate, so that, at any time, one set may be shut off and the other placed in operation. Automatic Control A feature of the new plant is its automatic control mechanism. This devise mechanically permits the gas to pass to a relief holder and prepares the machine for the next "run" by "blowing off." The "blowing off" process is accom- plished with a large exhaustor that shoots off, in a forced red and blue flame, the gases that have failed to pass through to the holder. A 42-inch pipe line conducts the gas to the relief holder. The gas only re- mains here temporarily as it goes next to the "scrubber"--a series of wooden trays cooled by running water. From the "scrubber," the gas goes to the Cottrell-precipitator--an elec- trically driven machine that purges the gas of some of its impurities, the major one of which is tar. The Cottreii op- erates under a voltage of 50,000. The by-product tar is transported through a pipe line to a storage tank after it has been removed from the gas. Gas Thoroughly Purged Other chemicals are still retained by the gas, however, after it leaves the Cottrell. The gas is not ready for dis- tribution until it has gone through the "purifier"--an elevated metal tank-- where it passes through a mixture of wood shavings and iron oxide. This mixture cleanses the gas of numerous Does Your OIL BURNER Need Attention? I Offer Personal Service on All Makes of Burners Electrical Repairs Too Immediate Service Satisfaction Guaranteed L.D. After the gas ha: leit the "purifier," it is carried to the giant holder where it stays until it goes out into the mains for its ultimate distribution. The oil used to enrich the gas is stored in a new 500,000 gallon tank which has been walled with concrete to eliminate all fire hazards. Children's Librarian Gives Talk Over Radio Miss Winifred Bright, children's librarian of the Wilmette library, spoke over radio station WHT on the Wrig- ley building last Monday morning on the subject of suitable book gifts for children. Miss Bright spoke at the request of the American Library As- sociation and in her introductory talk before taking up a discussion of specif- ic children's books, emphasized the desirability of choosing the best books. She called attention to the fact that there are many more or less worth- less volumes on the market and that it is just as easy to select a good book as a bad one. Then dealing with each one in a short review, Miss Bright listed a number of books, among them being volumes on airplanes, romantic tales, fairy tales and other branches of literature. She has 2lso compiled a list of suitable books and has copies of it on hand at the library for the benefit of local patrons.
