WE Er December 10, 1927 WILMETTE LIFE Il. EDGAR A. GUEST TO ADDRESS SUNDAY CLUB America's Best Known Poet and Philosopher Secured for Meet- ing of December 11 Edgar A. Guest, Amreica's best known and universally loved poet and philosopher, will be the speaker at the Wilmette Sunday Evening club, De- cember 11. The loftiest compliment one can pay this distinguished American is that "his name is a household word," for his daily poems and bits of homely philosophy appearing in more than 200 newspapers have endeared him to peo- ple, whether of high or lowly station, in every nook and corner of the land. Guest is essentially the "poet of the fireside," for most of his verse is con- cerned with the everyday things of life surrouniding home life. He "celebrates the joys of true home," while at the same time, his writings "strike the clearest notes of true poetry--some of the finest poetry of patriotism that has ever been written in America." Popular as Public Speaker As a public speaker, Mr. Guest ranks with the best platform orators in the country, though his talks are never "oratorical." His appeal is universal. Five minutes after he begins to speak he is an old friend to any sort of an audience. It has been said of him that if he hadn't become one of the coun- try's best known and best-loved writers, he might have been a great preacher --or a very popular actor. He talks to all his audiences in a tongue they know. Sunday night Mr. Guest will give readings of his own poems and spin a yarn that will strike a responsive chord in the heart of every listener. It is quite necessary to admonish Chief of Yellowstone Park Rangers to Speak Chief Ranger Martigale of the Yel- lowstone Natonal Park will speak next Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock before an audience at the Skokie school upon the subject "Wild Life in the Park." His lecture will be featured by the showing of slides. Mr. Martingale has been in the Ranger service at the national park for a period of many years and during this time has assembled an excellent group of pictures. The lecture is open to both children and parents who are urged to attend. Pupils Preparing Box for Kentucky Children Children of the Winnetka schools are already at work preparing stock- ings and gift boxes for the Christmas "treat box" which is sent each year to the Caney Creek district in Ken- tucky. This box when finally shipped will hold hundreds of packages con- taining all types of toys," Christmas foods and candies and wearing ap- parel. Miss Marian Elwell, principal of the Hubbard Woods school, will entertain all members of the Hubbard Woods faculty at dinner at the Orrington Ho- tel in Evanston next Monday evening. The Northwestern university chapter of Gamma Phi Beta held a formal dance at the Shawnee Country club last Saturday evening. There were 140 guests present. patrons of the Sunday Evening club not to be late for Eddie Guest. The capacity of the First Congregational church auditorium will be overtaxed, and it is our guess he will be com- pelled to address an over-flow meet- ing JH (HTH The win YON Ammon Studio The von Ammon Studio would like to help you make your Christmas shopping a pleasure.
