WINS IN ICE DERBY Philip Runnfeldt won the men's mile race in the annual Golden Skates Derby held at Boltwood park, Evans- ton, last Saturday afternoon. Runn- feldt held back in fourth place with such masters of the steel blades as the Rudolph brothers of Glencoe as com- petitors, but passed the field in the stretch to annex the honor. At Sunday Club The speaker at the Glencoe Sunday Evening club February 5, will be Dr. John Timothy Stone of the Fourth Presbyterian church of Chicago. Dr. Stone is so well known and popular in greater Chicago that he needs little introduction to the north shore. The residents of this community are to have an unusual opportunity in hear- ing this eminent man speak on the subject, "Christ and the Individual" The service will be held in the North Shore Methodist church, corner of Hazel and Greenleaf avenues, Glencoe. The hour is 8 o'clock. A cordial in- vitation is extended to all who enjoy an inspiring address and splendid music, to be present. Firemen Respond to 21 Alarms in Month of January The Winnetka Fire department dur- ing the month of January experienced what, in all probability, will prove to be one of the busiest months of the year, particularly in the number of calls. They responded to twenty-one alarms, but in between these duties found time for their annual ball, last Saturday evening, one of the most successful affairs of its kind in the history of the department. The month of February is also start- ing out with a promise of being an- other busy period, three calls having been received up to Thursday eve- ning. These were either rubbish or grass fires, however, and no damage resulted. One was at 1147 Sheridan road, one at Tower and Private roads and one on Ridge avenue, south of Winnetka avenue. The latter fire proved to be just over the line in Kenilworth, but Chief G. M. Houren and his men put it out, just the same. On January 27 the department was called to 928 Linden avenue, Hubbard Woods, by a flue fire and on the 28th, to Hubbard road and Willow street by a grass fire. : A more serious blaze occurred on January 30, at 2:35 in the morning at 1015 Cherry street, the residence of O. E. Ossner, resulting in damage to the extent of about $2,000. Fire from a defective fireplace dropping into the basement ignited materials, the blaze extending on up through the walls to the attic. On the second floor the fire broke through in a room occupied by Mr. Ossner's daughter. The following morning at 12:30 the department was called to the resi- dence of Justis Chancellor, 549 Oak street, to extinguish a fire in the base- ment caused by burning oil leaking from an oil burner in the heating plant. Mr. and Mrs. Frank D. Fulton of 884 Hill road left last week for a stay in Florida. Their daughter, Miss Helen, accompanied them.
