March 24, 1928 WINNETKA-TALK Not a Street Sweeper But Could Do the Job No, that is not a new street sweeper being displayed in the window of Por- ter"s Electric shop, 797 Elm street, Winnetka, but it is a Hoover, and Mr. Porter says that with the reputation of a Hoover for "clean sweeping," has no doubt but what this machine, which is attracting so much attention, if given an opportunity to sweep the village streets, would do a good job, all right. But its one and only function in Winnetka, is to remain on display in the window where it now reposes. Porter's Electric shop sells Hoover vacuum sweepers, and this complete over-sized machine, built on a scale of better than two and one-half to one, as compared with the workable Hoover, is proving an attractive display. The face of the sweeper is 32 inches, the air tubes resemble fire hose, the dust bag is 5 feet 10 inches in lengths and the length of the machine from tip to tip, is eleven feet. Mr. Porter says it is simply made to look at, and his display of Atwater Kent radios, always tuned in, he says are for the further entertainment of his customers. Of course, he has them in all styles for sale; also Telechrom clocks, Maytag washers and every- thing electrical. Dwight Ingram of 1423 Asbury ave- nue, member of the Insurance firm of Griffin, Ingram, and Pfaff, and L. S. Chichester of Glencoe, of the Chicago Trust company, were elected Monday as trustee members of the board for the Provident Hospital and Training school. -_---- The Misses Louise and Antoinette Lackner return today from Vassar college to spend their week of spring vacation with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis A. Lackner of 339 Linden avenue. Phones Masonic Bridge Contest Evinces Unusual Interest Great interest is being evidenced in the prize bridge contest which the Winnetka Masonic club is sponsoring for local Masons and their friends. Play started Tuesday March 13, and will continue each Tuesday evening through this month and April Some of the regulations guiding the players have been announced as fol- OWS : The contestants will be allowed to have only one partner for the entire series and the combined scores will be considered in the awarding of the many valuable prizes. Duplicate bridge will be played, and by this interesting, yet simple method all teams play the same hands during each evening. Absent partners may provide substi- tute players when it proves to be necessary. The committee consists of Ferdinand Wolter, Charles Lovgren, William S. Nordburg, and Charles Carlstrand. Plan Elimination of Sharp Curve on Winnetka Ave. Action was taken by the Winnetka Village council Tuesday evening, to- ward the elimination of the sharp angle on the north side of Winnetka avenue, about 250 feet west of Sheridan road. Trustee H. L. Raclin, chairman of the streets, drainage and forestry committee, reported that Felix Lowy has agreed to donate the necessary land and the council will do the work, the estimated cost of which is about $900. It is planned to do it this com- ing season. John R. Leonard of 861 Bryant avente, is well on the way to recovery from a most severe case of pneu- monia. His daughter, Mrs. Hibbard Casselberry of Winter Park, Fla. is returning in about a week to her family. Present Country Day Senior Play Tonight The Senior play of the North Shore Country Day school will be presented tonight, Saturday, March 24, in the school auditorium. The play is "Tillie of Bloomsbury," by Ian Hay. This is the second performance of the play in which every member of the class has a part. Tickets may be obtained at the door. Newell S. Knight of Kenilworth and Alfred Brittain of Winnetka are re- turning Sunday from two weeks in Biloxi.
