Brethold, the veteran real estate man and north shore builder, with offices at 545 Main street, Wil- mette, who has witnessed not only the growth of Chicago from a very small city, but has also participated in the development of the north shore, and has kept posted on the expansion of the fine acreage sections hereabouts, is just as enthusiastic as ever over all these favored spots, but he cannot say as much for some others. Mr. Brethold, like every other north shore resident, is anything else but a pessimist, but because of some experi- ence he once had in the way of farm investments, he admits he is somewhat of a skeptic when it comes to advocat- ing the advisability of investing in farm lands, remotely removed from Chicago. Chicago area farm land he knows is still good, because Chicago is gradual- ly growing out to meet these sections, and here, Mr. Brethold will, some day, be building more of the Brethold type of house for which he long ago estab- lished a name for himself on the north shore. He also realizes that good Illinois farms, where banner crops of wheat and corn are grown to aid in feeding the ever increasing population of Chi- cago, will continue to retain the value and perhaps increase many fold in years to come. Others Not as Good But down in parts of Missouri? That, he insists, is different. A few years ago, in the sale of some Chicago property, he acquired in the transaction two farms in the part of Missouri referred to. One tract comprised 120 acres and the other was a full quarter section. Taxes have been paid from year to year on these farms, and, fortunately, the amounts were small, but the rental southeast value has been correspondingly nomi- nal. Recently a "wide-awake" real estate man down there inquired if these farms were for sale and for how much. Of course they were for sale, but negotiations soon demonstrated that it was useless to try to get "much" for them. Finally, Mr. Brethold sent the deeds to a bank near where the farms are located, and told the real estate man to get him $100 each, for the farms, $100 Per Farm Not $100 per acre, but $100 for the entire farm, on each of which there is a small cottage and some tillable land, where a little corn and tobacco may be grown, but more hills where goats may graze, and some wooded areas where timber abounds for making barrel staves and hoops, providing, however, one has the inclination to work at that sort of labor. Neither deal has yet been closed, but Mr. Brethold hopes he soon will have $200 for his two farms, and when he gets it, he says he will re-invest the money in a tiny little speck of north shore real estate, something he knows, by long years of experience, is worth real money any day in the week.
