April 28, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 41 Mosquito Fighters Survey Streams and Map Out Campaign Hostile eyes are on the mosquitoes in their breeding haunts preparatory to the opening of actual combat on the pests within the next week, possibly depending on the amount of water in the streams. Fifteen carloads of Mos- quito Abatement district trustees and engineers and sympathizers in the war spent Sunday inspecting the streams to the west of here, especially the north branch of the Chicago rive: which runs up into the Skokie marsh region. They found the many places where the streams need cleaning up and spotted a series of blockades in them caused by deposits of one sort or an- other. These will be removed to per- mit the flow of water and prevent the stagnant places inviting breeding of mosquitoes. Near Glenview the inspection party found storm sewers which real estate developers, it was assumed, had had built so that they crossed over the beds of the creeks and made veritable dams, according to Arthur Stringer, president of the district, who was on the inspection tour.. Bridges were found in New Trier township built with wooden supports under the steel construction which formed stagnant pools. These are some of the situations which will be attacked by the Sanitary district shortly. John T. Miller, chief engineer, and Dr. Herman Bundesen. sanitary commissioner, in recent con- ference with Mr. Stringer, stated that the work of the Sanitary district in the section west of here will start as soon as the water goes down, possibly by the start of next week. Orders have been placed by the North Shore district for four Interna- tional trucks which will be outfitted Local People to Join in Cathedral Fund Ball Young people of St. Augustine's church and the Church of the Holy Comforter are actively engaged in pro- moting the Third Annual May Ball for the benefit of the Cathedral-for- Chicago fund. The ball will be given by the Episcopal Young People's as- sociation of the Diocese of Chicago at the Drake hotel, Friday evening, May 4. Music for the dancers will be furnished by Husk O'Hare and his Stevens hotel orchestra, and there will be professional entertainment between dances. The ball is an annual enter- prise of the diocesan association of young people, begun in 1926. Since then more than $4,000 has been added to the fund for rebuilding the Episco- pal Cathedral in Chicago, solely by proceeds from the May Ball. Box- holders and patrons and patronesses also include many local people.
