Chicago and suburbs has only eight hundred and forty places in the Citi- zens' Military Training camp at Fort Sheridan, July 27 to August 25. Al- ready five hundred applications have been filed by young men and reserva- tions made by employers who are commonly giving two weeks extra vacation with pay to a certain number of their office and factory forces. The Government pays all necessary expenses for the thirty days in camp, including transportation, un iforms, comfortable quarters in Army tents and excellent meals in the new mess halls. The mornings are given to military drill and instruction, the afternoons to a great variety of outdoor sports under competent coaching, the evenings to various forms of entertainment, lec- tures, concerts, athletic matches, dances and moving pictures. Ample playing fields will be ready for baseball, football, volleyball, tennis, boxing, wrestling and fencing and there is an excellent bathing beach close by. A great field of long distance run- ners, many of whom are certain to land berths on the American Olympic team, will compete in the mile and two mile runs in the Western Confer- ence Track and Field championships to be held in Dyche stadium of North- western university May 25 and 26. While each event has its assemblage of stars, the long distance runs are especially well fortified with star per- formers who will go a long way towards forcing some time off of the existing marks for these events. Records in both the mile and two mile are expected to be approached if not broken. *Among the star milers are Martin of Purdue, Elliott of Iowa, Fields, Banks, Little and Clapham of Indiana, Mon- roe of Michigan, Abbott, McElwee, Novak and Stine of Illinois and Bulla- more, Petaja and Moe of Wisconsin. Martin must be considered a favor- ite due to the 4:22 mile he ran in the Purdue-Chicago dual meet May 5. He will probably encounter his greatest opposition from the Illinois milers mentioned above. Fields of Indiana is another runner who must be figured to pick off some points. Junior Debaters Defeat Seniors at Mallinckrodt A Junior debating team of Mal- linckrodt high school, composed of Miss Frances Thurston, Miss Eleanor O'Brien and Miss Marjorie Koenig, was awarded a victory over the Senior team in a debate, "Is Democracy a Better Form of Government Than Autocracy?" in the school auditorium last Monday afternoon. The Seniors, Miss Anna Marie Shea, Miss Blanche Keil and Miss June Hoffman, took the affirmative side, while the Juniors took the negative. The chairman was Miss Betty Faetz of the Senior class and there were three judges. When the votes of the judges were cast, the Juniors were awarded the decision. Both teams expressed their ideas on the subject well, but the Juniors, because their side was a most 'difficult one to debate, were returned the victors All the students at the Ridge High school were present to hear the debate. That was indicated Wed- nesday when the first meeting of the North Shore Real Estate board's golf- ers was held at the Wilmette Golf club.
