May 12, 1928 WINNETKA TALK Fire Causes $20,000 Damage to Edmunds' Home in Kenilworth A fire at the home of H. O. Ed- munds, 27 Kenilworth avenue, Kenil- worth, on Thursday, May 3, caused damage estimated at more than $20,000 and occasioned the Wilmette Fire de- partment, augmented by a squad and engine from Winnetka, a battle of sev- eral hours before it was finally placed under control and extinguished. The fire started, it is thought, from either a cigaret or torch used by work- men engaged in remodeling the home and had been burning within the walls for more than an hour before it was discovered and the Wilmette Fire de- partment notified. At the time of the arrival of the firemen the flames had begun to break through at the gables and roof. Both the Wilmette and Winnetka engines were forced to pump water on the blaze for several hours before it was subdued. A second alarm was turned in while the department was engaged in fight- ing the Kenilworth blaze by residents in the vicinity of Fourth street and Linden avenue where an automobile had caught fire. One of the engines was recalled from the Kenilworth fire and, making a rapid run, extinguished the second blaze before material damage was done. On the following day, Friday, May 4, the department was called to 707 Lin- den avenue to extinguish a prairie fire. On Saturday, May 5, an alarm was turned in from 513 Main street where crossed electric wires had ignited woodwork = surrounding them. The damage was negligible. On Tuesday of this week, a faulty oil burner at 435 Main street occa- sioned the trucks a run. A fence at Thirteenth "street and Forest avenue was partially destroyed by fire on Wednesday of this week.
