Students Hear Last Vocational Guidance Talk The last of the series of vocational guidance lectures arranged for the Juniors of New Trier High school by Samuel Vernon, faculty adviser chair- man, was given last Wednesday when Arthur H. Caryer, director of the in- dustrial relations department of Swift and company, spoke on commercial work as a profession. The series has included talks by many prominent professional and business men and has included a large number of fields. It has been con- ducted for the purpose of having the pupils gain an insight into the many possible vocations through hearing leading members of the various pro- fessions and, as it has been considered decidedly successful, will be continued next year. The meet, which has been designated as an Olympic tryout by the president of the Olympic committee, Gen. Doug- las MacArthur, will be held at Stagg Field, June 1 and 2. It affords the largest track and field competition in the country, with more than a thou- sand prep athletes entered. It is open to the public free of charge and there will be free reserved seats for those New Trier fans who wish to attend. . Dave Wanger, who won the broad jump at Marquette and took first in the Lake Shore division trials for the state meet, is New Trier's best bet for several points. Carl Hall may be able to place in the high jump if he gets going as good as he was. the first part of the year. The mile relay team, which was tied for second at Marquette, is sure to make a good showing. Coach Nay will also enter a two mile team if his half milers can get going a little faster. Ted Burgess, who switched {from the mile to the half at the start of the outdoor season, has never been beaten in the longer event. He ought to be able to place in the Stagg meet, although there is always a very for- midable field entered in the mile, be- cause he ran a very fast mile in the state trials and is improving all the time. New Trier captured fourth place in the Lake Shore division tryouts for the State meet, held at Oak Park last Saturday, although only a small part of the team was entered. Oak Park was victorious in a close fight with Evanston for first place. Proviso was third. Ted Burgess nosed out Hammond of Deerfield to win the mile in the fast time of 4 minutes 45 9-10 seconds. Marty Cassell and Simpson, an Ev- anston man, led the rest of the field in the quarter mile. Marty kept the pole all the way and although Simp- son sometimes came abreast of him he couldn't quite pass him and the New Trier man hit the tape just a few yards ahead. Dave Wanger, whose springy legs are bringing much honor to the Gray and Green, won the broad jump easily. Kershaw placed fifth in the javelin throw and tied with Wineberd of Ev- anston in the pole vault. RODEO JULY 28-AUGUST 5 Chicago's fourth annual world's championship rodeo will be held at Soldier Field from July 28 to August 5 with $33,000 in cash prizes to be won by the cowboy and cowgirl ropers, rid- ers and steer wrestlers. Every after- noon and evening for the nine days the athletes from the cattle country will contest for the prize money and the coveted world's championship titles under the direction of Tex Austin.
