May 19, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 59 Dorothy Speare, Author-Songster, in Festival Role Those who as yet know Dorothy Speare only through the medium of her best sellers and her magazine ar- ticles, will be able to judge for them- selves the quality of her voice when she makes her western debut as a soloist at the North Shore music fes- tival in Evanston Thursday, May 24. Heralded as the greatest box-office attraction since Marion Talley, this young artist, who at the age of 21, a graduate of Smith and Radcliffe, found herself an idol of the literary world, but who forsook belles lettres for bel canto, promises to be one of the sensa- tions of the festival. Miss Speare's rather amazing story begins with her polite dismissal from Professor Baker's class in play-writ- ing at Harvard when she was study- ing vocal culture. at night and going | to sleep during the lectures, and con- tinues with the success of her first novel, "Dancers in the Dark," and an offer from Belasco not only to produce the play of which she had completed the first act, but to star her as an actress. How she abandoned a sure thing, studied in France and Italy, was prom- ised a debut at the Dal Verme in Milan by the famous impressario, Creste Poli; how, on the eve of her debut, she completely lost her voice, and after recuperating on the Riviera and in America, returned to Italy to save a provincial opera company from bank- ruptcy by singing "Lucia" at a mo- | ment's notice is best told by herself | in her recent magazine articles. Atfer a two years' experience as a prima donna in the leading Italian opera houses, Miss Speare made her American operatic debut last Decem- ber with the Washington National Opera company, and her concert debut in Boston, last January.
