May 26, 1928 WINNETKA TALK ni To Start Tearing Down Shawnee Club On Tuesday, May 29 The May party, a dinner dance tomorrow evening, and a bridge lunch- eon on Monday, May 28, will be the last parties to be held by Shawnee Country club in its old quarters and will tax them to capacity. Tuesday morning wreckers will start demolish- ing the old clubhouse that has been a center of social activity in Wilmette for so many years. Time was when a handful of Wilmette residents used to follow the light of a lantern along a grassy path to parties in the first quarters of old Ouilmette Country club, but now cars arrive for club parties from points all along the north shore. Early this fall the Ouilmette Country club merged with the Evanston Cen- tury club to form the Shawnee Coun- try club and the resultant membership comprises residents from Evanston to Highland Park, and beyond. It has been steadily increasing, due to the attractive and convenient location on which the stunning new building will be erected and the thought that the club is developing into one for the entire family. Thursday evening, May 17, a large crowd of members came to the club for the regular buffet supper which was followed by the annual meeting and election of officers. Three of this past year's board were re-elected, Albert N. Page, to serve again as president; Dr. C. H. Searles, vice-president; H. I. Fogg, as secretary. J. M. Budinger will be the new. treasurer, and Elmer S. Bersbach, Daniel H. Burnham, and James B. French are elected as mem- bers of the board of governors to serve three years from July 1. Thursday evening was the occasion of the final buffet supper in the old quarters and the rooms were filled with members and their families. Many members are planing to attend the May party Saturday evening. Sports clothes will be the popular costume and an excellent dinner will be served at 7:30 o'clock. Charles W. Triggs, who is in charge of special entertainment at the club, promises the services of a delightful soprano, Suzanne France, during the dinner hour. Later there will be bridge er dancing to music by Jackson's "Red- birds." Wallace IL. Miller is chairman of the evening. The monthly pivot luncheons have been favorites with the women in the club and the one to be: given this coming Monday will have a record crowd. Mrs. William Holmes, chair- man of the affair, and Mrs. Arthur W. Allen will be hostesses. Mr. French, who is directing the demolishing of the old building, announces that the first brick will be torn away with the playing of the last card Monday, and that if any aces are trumped, destruc- tion proceedings will begin at once. The committees of the club have carried out an active and social pro- gram during tlie year, giving its new members an excellent opportunity to be assimilated into the organization and the entire membership is antici- pating the opéning of the new club- house during the holidays. TO GIVE DANCE AND PLAY The members of the St. Agnes So- dality of Sacred Heart church of Hubbard Woods will present a play and give a dance on June 7. Miss Alice Weber is taking the leading part in the play "The Triumph of the Serv- ants." Miss Weber is a student at Mallinckrodt High school in Wilmette.
