June 16, 1928 WINNETKA: TALK 53 Novel Dude Ranch | 'When Lawrence Nordquist, one of the best known guides and hunters in Wyoming, announced his intention of starting a ranch, a group of Win- netka people who had been with him on pack trips every summer for many years, begged him to try out their theory that a definite discriminating demand exists for a dude ranch with the following qualifications. 1. Accommodations limited to ap- proximately one dozen guests but with every possible comfort, convenience and service for this number, although on a simple scale. 2. Location beyond the reach of the automobile. 3. Good fishing. 4. Beautiful and wild surrounding country. Secures Ideal Ranch Mr. Nordquist finally secured the ideal ranch in line with these ideas. He was able to buy a ranch in the tiny valley of Clarks Fork River, best described geographically as directly in the corner formed by Wyoming, Mon- tana and the eastern edge of Yellow- stone Park. The average western dude ranch was originally a cattle ranch and consequently located in the widest and most fertile valley and as far as possible from the mountains and canyons. As a result, the vaca- tionist sacrifices a good portion of each day going and coming in order to penetrate the woods, mountains or canyons where he is out of sight of civilization and away from the whir of motors and the smell of gasoline. The ranch secured by Mr. Nordquist was originally a homestead in the for- est preserve and limited to grazing rights for a few hundred cattle and horses. The river which is famous for the most consistently good fishing in the state, flows through the ranch, the Ab- saroka mountains rise within a quarter mile back of the ranch and across the river a gradual slope leads to the Granites of Montana and the Bear Tooth range. It is immediately in the best big game pocket of the Rockies. One hunter from Winnetka shot a mountain sheep and a bear within ten miles from the ranch last year. It is a splendid starting point for pack trips as a loop can be made through hundreds of miles of wild country with- out going a mile on wagon roads. It is an excellent starting point for short pack trips to such points as Grasshop- per, Glacier, Bear Tooth Lake, Sun- light Basin, Yellowstone Lake, Yellow- stone Canyon, etc. It is equally ideal for the vacationist who is happy to stay at the ranch with its glorious view, its fishing almost at the back door and innumerable horseback rides to nearby lakes and outlooks. Popular With Winnetkans This ranch was secured by Mr. Nordquist three years ago. New fam- ily cabins were erected and a bath house installed. Families from Win- netka and Lake Forest have filled the cabins during the summer season of July, August and September or have been out on pack trips from the ranch. A group of Winnetka boys has each year formed their own party and taken a ninety day pack trip from the ranch. The trip to the ranch is one of the most delightful parts of the experi- ence. The visitor leaves the train at Gardiner, Montana, the northern ex- treme to the Yellowstone Park. He is met by a motor stage which trans- ports him, bag and baggage, forty miles over a beautiful government road up the valley of the Lamar and turns off up a side road to the semi-deserted mining camp of Cooke, Montana. Here the automobile road ends and the tra- veler covers the remaining ten miles to the ranch on horseback or wagon over a logging road that no automobile could survive. 48 Hours from Chicago When the traveler dismounts from his horse at the little group of cabins facing the great sweep of mountains, he feels that the beauty and coziness of it is enhanced by every mile of rough road that guards it from the tourist and the transient. As a mat- ter of fact, the trip from Chicago to the ranch has occupied only slightly over forty-eight hours. i Among the north shore families who have visited the Nordquist ranch are: Mr. and Mrs. N. H. Blatchford, Mr. and Mrs. Rush C. Butler, Mr. and Mrs. F. K. Copeland, Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Copeland, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Dole, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Hamill, Mr. F. C. Manierre, Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Tenney, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Wolcott. The North Shore Branch of the Women of Rotary was entertained at the home of Mrs. James S. Rowley, 1128 Greenwood avenue, Wilmette, Wednesday, June 13, on the occasion of the last meeting of the season. HOME FOR DOG When you go traveling have your dog taken care of.
