' Given to Museum by Soderblom, of 906 Linden avenue, | Cup event will be the feature of the _High Honor at Harvard Hubbard Woods, burst into flames William A. Magie II, son of Mrs. Richard T. Crane, Jr. A beautiful cut bowl, made from an extremely large and flawless piece of rose quartz, a stone much in vogue at present for necklaces and other jewelry, was placed on exhibition this week at the Field Muséum of Natural History. This bowl, which is of high value because of the extreme rarity of so large a block of rose quartz as that from which it was cut, and because of the delicate quality of artistry in cutting which it exemplifies, is a gift to the museum from Richard T. Crane, Ir The bowl is about twelve inches in diameter, and six inches high. It is translucent, and beautifully marked. The rose quartz from which it was cut was obtained in the Black Hills of South Dakota; the cutting was done about six years ago by skilled artisans at Idar, Germany. So skillfully was this work done that there is not the slightest fracture in the piece, although the walls have been ground down and polished to less than an eighth of an inch in thickness. The rose color of quartz is unusually deep in this specimen, according to Dr. O. C. Farrington, curator of ge- ology, and the bowl is a remarkable example of the workmanship of the lapidists of Idar, especially when it is considered that at the time it was made they worked only with wooden grinding wheels driven by water power. By using wheels of special shapes, and exerting the pressure of their whole bodies against them for many hours a day, the rough mass of quartz was converted into this delicately rounded and designed, symmetrical thin-walled bowl. Other specimens just added to the gem collections in H. N. Higinbotham hall of the museum through the gen- erosity of Mr. Crane include some unusually patterned pieces of agate and green aventurine from Siberia.
