A i August 4, 1928 WINNETKA "TALK Seasonal Activity No Longer Counts in Realty Market The pronounced seasonal rise and fall in the activity of the real estate market "is tending to disappear. This is shown unmistakably in a study of the official records of real estate trans- fers reported to the National Associa- tion of Real Estate Boards for the compilation of its monthly index of the real estate market. The former lowering of activity beginning in De- cember and prevailing noticeably in January and February has perceptibly lessened during the period from 1916 to 1928. The study showed there is increas- ing activity in the so-called slow sea- sons and a corresponding decrease in activity in the peak seasons, bringing about a steadier condition in the mar- ket. To the average property holder this means that there is coming to be no reason for waiting for some "peak season' before putting real estate on the market, or for a "dull season" be- fore buying a house. There is a definite tendency toward more uni- form activity. The reason for this general steady- ing may be traced to several sources. Chief of these is the fact that build- ing construction has become less sea- sonal. Also climatic conditions throughout the United States are such that there is considerable tendency for unfavorable conditions in one sec- tion to be off-set by favorable condi- tions in others. Limestone House Not Expensive to Build Those who have a deep rooted de- sire in their hearts for a stone house and yet have always thought that "of course, it is too expensive," may be amazed to know that limestone is now employed in residence construction with as practical results as brick, stucco, or wood. Handled as a veneer to stud frame walls, or as a structural facing over hollow tile or brick, the method is simple, the material easy to handle, and the entire process not an expen- sive one. Nor does the home owner need to secure the services of a stone cutter as a stone mason or a bricklayer can do the work. This limestone facing comes in several strips and on the job these strips are broken, jointed and laid up. Bronze Weather Strips in One Piece Are Innovation Bronze weather strips are an inno- vation in the building field. They come in one piece, so formed as to make a double cushion, and it is claimed they are impervious to leaks. With these weather strips the metal is so thin that a pair of ordinary household scissors can cut it. Installation may be made around doors and windows with a small hammer and nails of the solid brass head type. Losses From Rust Amount to Millions Every Year For years the losses from rust have amounted to millions of dollars a year. Many a home owner can attest the truth of this from his own personal experience in a small way. He re- members the bills he has paid for the replacement of corrodible piping, rust- ed screens, worn out gutters, and down spouts and hardware. Now the trend of the times shows a tendency towards saving on these losses. We find screens of bronze and brass piping throughout the house. Shingles are given a copper coating, hardware appears in simple patterns of brass and bronze, at least on the outside of entrance doors and decorations which are exposed at all seasons to the elements. Home owners are figuring more and more on the basis of the ten year cost rather than the present cost. For that sort of buying is money in the pocket, whether one sells the home in a few years or lives in it indefinitely. SCREENS AS STORM DOORS Panels of insulating lumber can now be installed in the screen doors when fall comes, so as to make them serv- iceable through the winter as storm doors. Then, when summer returns, the panels may be removed and the screen doors employed again in their original capacity.
