T22-1te Follies Open in a Blaze of Glory at Four Cohans Sunday The event of the week in theatrical circles was the opening, in a blaze of glory, of the Greenwich Village Follies at the Four Cohans theatre. Here is a revue, slightly different from the usual variety, but one which profits by the change. Common .practice has seemed to indicate the necessity of ob- taining one or two individual stars around whom a show, of one kind or another, might be built. A different procedure has been followed here. There are no outstanding stars. Per- formers compete with each other for laughs, applause and encores. And such vaudeville headliners as Blossom See- ley and Benny Fields are extended to the limit to keep up with the Nautch Dancers, the Chester Hale Girls or Jans and Whalen. Taken as a whole, the show is one of the best all around revues seen here n some time. If you exclude one or two raw sketches, it is a clean show. The dancing is marvelous with the six- teen Chester Hale girls comparing fa- vorably with any group ever seen in Chicago. The comedy is smart and continuous. Costumes are beautiful and apparently new. The settings are satisfactory. The outstanding comedian carries the name of Doctor Rockwell. A few evenings with him and one might need the services of a real practitioner. Doctor Rockwell is another headliner from vaudeville who has been drafted for revue purposes. A sort of cross between Ed Wynn and Joe Cook, he introduces the acts, plays in the sketches and does an individual turn or two of his own. He is a smart per- former and a decidedly funny one. August may be a hot mohth but the Four Cohans is decidedly cool and this particular revue well worth a visit. College movies and college plays are quite popular nowadays. The Varsity theater offers for your approval this Saturday, August 4, Rod La Rocque in "Hold 'em Yale." In this picture Mr. La Rocque forgets his tailor and has a grand time for himself as: a South American Jack Gilbert who be- comes a football star. Big Tom Ken- nedy, as a bone-headed cop, and a monkey called "Firpo" contribute to the nonsense. The girl is Jeannette Loff--not so well known but very, very nice. For the benefit of those who like Miss Clara Bow and also for those who think Mr. Richard Arlen is a big he- man the Varsity has scheduled "Ladies of the Mob" for next Monday, Tues- day, and Wednesday, August 6, 7, and 8. "Ladies of the Mob" is a crook pic- ture. Richard Arlen is a handsome yegg and Clara is his yeggess--though not his wife. She feels like a wife to- ward him and would like to be just that. It is not the usual Clara Bow picture, with the bewitching red-haired miss out to get her man. This time Clara plays a different role, in which she battles in the cause of right and struggles to hold her man. The sup- porting roles are splendidly portrayed. Clara and Richard are their own recommendation. August 4, 1928 BR Tom Mix Film Heads List of Teatro del Lago Attractions Tom Mix heads the list of screen actors to be seen at the Teatro del Lago beginning this Saturday, August 4. On that day the Teatro will show "Painted Post," another western pic- ture. The story, summed up in a sen- tence is this: Tom Blake (Tom Mix), sheriff, saves the pay roll and the girl from the bandits. The girl is Natalie Kingston, a dark-eyed beauty, who in this picture makes her debut in a west- ern opposite Mix. The photography is excellent. Ramon Novarro is the star of "A Certain Young Man," com- ing to the Teatro del Lago this Sun- day, August 5. Novarro plays a young London lord, whose flirtations are the talk of the town until he meets THE girl, and then his efforts to live down his past are comical in the extreme. A charming romance runs through it. Elaborate reproductions of Europe's playgrounds are the scenes of the merry and whimsical love story. Far surpassing in emotional drama her previous work as a comedienne, Colleen Moore has given a perform- ance in the stellar role of "Happiness Ahead" that unquestionably should be considered the finest of her career. "Happiness Ahead" opens at the Tea- tro Monday for two days. The story centers about an unsophisticated girl from a small town, who becomes the wife of a city card-shark.
