a August 11, 1928 WINNETKA TALK New Trier Baseball Teams Will Compete For Hirschberg Cup For the next five Sundays the base- ball teams of Winnetka, Glencoe, and Wilmette will be engaged in a Town- ship Championship race, the victor to receive the beautiful Hirschberg tro- phy. The trophy has been presented by S. Hirschberg of Glencoe, who is endeavoring to stimulate interest in north shore baseball. The teams of the north shore rank with the best teams in the Midwest league though the attendance at the games has never warranted such good teams, and it is with the view of in- creasing interest in the home town team, that Mr. Hirschberg has offered the prize. "Town folks will often travel all the way into Chicago to see a major league team play," quotes one fan, "when all they have to do is go to the Skokie Playfield on a Sunday afternoon and witness equally interesting games. Many of the boys playing under the colors of the local town will in the very near future be playing in organ- ized baseball, and, furthermore, greater interest is aroused because the boys are from the home town." The standing of the Township cham- pionship is as follows: won lost. per cent Winnetka ...... 1 1,000 Glencoe oo... 2 1 666 Wilmette ....... 0 2 000 Mrs. Francisco Martin and Miss Yolanda Martin of Seville, Spain, are guests at the home of Mrs. Mellen C. Martin, 630 Rosewood avenue, for the month of August. --C-- Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Durham and family of 808 Auburn road are spend- ing the summer in Jamestown, R. I. They will return early in September. Winnetka Garden Club's Flowers Brighten Station Have you noticed the profusion of gorgeously colored petunias blooming around the North Western station? There are other flowers surrounding the library and the window boxes add pleasing touches as did the many tulips which occupied the beds before the petunias were in season. All this has been done through the kindness and generosity of the Winnetka Garden club and though so many members of the club are away during the summer that it has been found expedient not to try to hold meetings, the fruits--or rather the flowers--of their labor are here to remind us in a charming way of the existence of this club. Play Club, Class Champ Events at North Shore The first round in the Club and Class championship events will be played at the North Shore Golf club this Saturday. The sixteen players in each class with lowest handicaps as of August 1, this season, will be eligible to compete. Other features of Satur- day's play will be the final round in the President's trophy event, and the prize for winner in low putts, 18 holes. The annual Silver Tassel Invitation tournament will be played at North Shore Wednesday, August 15. Allan Ferry, Phelps Wilder and Louis Dean returned last Monday from a western trip. They drove out to Camp Cook, S. D., and from there into. Montana. They were away for about four weeks. --Q-- Willard T. Carter, director of Re- ligious Education at the Union church, gave a reading Wednesday night of negro sermons in verse, "God's Trom- bones." Last Wednesday Mr. Carter read a religious play, "El Cristo."
