August 25, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 7 Cop Does Olympiad Vaults to Capture Fleeing Miscreant A touring car which had made a dis- mal failure in its attempt to climb a tree at the side of Sheridan road, in the 500 block, attracted the attention of Officer Alfred Facchini, early Sun- day morning. Facchini, after further investiga- tion, discovered a young couple hiding in a secluded part of the Maple street park. They ran away as Facchini ap- proached, the boy heading in one di- rection and the girl in another. Fac- chini, being something of a sprinter himself, and particularly adept at vaulting fences, soon had the girl in custody, and, in order to make more forceful his command to the youth to halt, fired a coaxing aerial blast from his trusty "rod." The lad promptly surrendered, said has name was George Schaffer, of 425 Surf street, Chicago, and admitted that he had stolen the car that night from Arthur Olsen of 1722 Farragut avenue, Chicago. The girl was Agnes Rogers, of 6322 Lakewood avenue, Chicago, who later in the day was permitted to return to her home accompanied by her mother. Grass and Weeds Burn; Fire Department Called The Winnetka fire department re- ceived two calls to that section of the Skokie in the vicinity of Edgewood lane and Grove street the first part of the week. The first one, Sunday eve- ning at 6:30, was to extinguish a blaze caused by burning grass and weeds, and the second call, Wednesday after- noon at 1 o'clock, was to put out a fire in the ground. The smouldering em- bers from the Sunday evening blaze had worked their way down into the dry, cracked Skokie marsh, over which it was necessary to play a stream of water for thirty minutes to stop the blaze and smoke.
