September 22, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 11 265 New Trier Boys Apply for Football or will] The football season started off with a bang at New Trier last week. Alto- gether 265 New Trierites signed up for football. The greatest number of can- didates was for the Freshman-Sopho- more team, an even 100 receiving uni- forms for that squad. There were eighty-five players on the first week's varsity squad and only eighty out for Intramural. From all appearances the varsity should have a very successful season this year although it is up against as stiff a schedule as a Gray-Green team ever faced. Besides the foremost op- ponents of last fall, New Trier will play four strange teams; Lindbloom, Kenosha, Oak Park and Streator. These four will probably be the hard- est and most exciting of the season. The complete schedule is at the end of this article. Ten Lettermen Return Ten lettermen are back on the team this year. They are: Captain Wien- ecke, a most capable guard; Way Thompson and Rossitter, tackles; Ala Hoagland, Morris Nelson, Charles MacArthur and Tom Hicks, all snappy halfbacks; Hunter Hicks, last season's regular quarterback; Al Richards and Jorncamp, fullbacks. Jesides the lettermen there are several members of last years squad and some promising graduates of Freshman-Sophomore and Intramural teams. The other candidates, who were not considered varsity material were cut from the squad on Monday. They will play on the Freshman-Sophomore or Intramural teams. According to Coach Ashenbach, Charles MacArthur will probably be taken out of the backfield and paired with Wienecke to fill the vacant posi- tion at guard. Carl Hall, Milton Guy, Borncamp and Schrader are the most likely candidates for the end positions. Predict Strong Line Line-Coach Caton thinks that the line will be pretty strong this year although several of the positions are bound to be weak. He says that cen- ter is the most doubtful position. Cul- len, Rudolf, Dickinson and Nygaard look best for center now. The Freshman-Sophomore team has five veterans back. Cavanaugh, Sel- lery, Howe and Bunch in the line and Hunter in the backfield. A few of the Freshman-Sophomore squad, and almost all of the Intramural players, are unable to practice now be- cause the supply of uniforms has given out. There should be enough equipment by next week though. Twenty-four new uniforms have been ordered for the varsity. The Freshman-Sophomore schedule is not definite yet but it is pretty cer- tain that they will play lightweight teams from Oak Park, Evanston, Wau- kegan and Deerfield.
