4 September 29, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 53 "Hup" Century Wins Honors in Big Test in Alpine Country American built cars are holding a high position in Europe, according to Gould C. Davis of Winnetka, Hupmo- bile dealer, who has received detailed accounts of a victory scored late last month by a Hupmobile Century Six stock car in the five day International Alpine Test over the steepest grades of the Alps in Italy, Switzerland and Austria. The International Alpine Test is con- sidered in Europe the most difficult au- tomobile durability contest of the pres- ent day. It is a post-war revival of the old international Alpine drive started in 1898 as a bicycle and automobile race and for years, until interrupted by the World War, was the outstand- ing event of Southern Europe's motor- ing world. The course, from Milan, Italy, to Munich, Bavaria, is 1180 miles and traverses the highest moun- tain tract in Europe. It crosses such amous passes as the Simplon, with an altitude of 6,560 feet, the Furka, 7,701 feet, the St. Gothard, 7,216 feet, and the Stilfser, 8,053 feet. Heinz Hinterleitner, who drove the winning Hupp, received the Interna- tional Alpine Gold Cup as a trophy for his feat. "The special advantages of the Hup- mobile are its very deep center of gravity, which makes it possible to go into curves at high speed without skid- ding, its new style of spring suspen- sion and frame reinforcement, which prevent wobbling of the front wheels, the new steeldraulic brakes with sixfold braking power--making it possible 'o stop the car even while at top speeds-- and its exceptionally flexible steering ability," says Mr. Davis. The combina- tion of such features made possible this European triumph. Dodge's Unfilled Orders Reported at High Figure Unfilled orders for the new Senior Six models numbering thousands is still reported by the factory, accord- ing to W. T. Wersted, Winnetka dealer, "Typical Dodge dependability with a new era in motor car style was the verdict of those who first drove the new Senior Six," said Mr. Wersted. "Its appearance, mechanical refine- ments and added luxury have made an immediate appeal to the buying public. This accounts for the de- mand." NEW PACKARD APPEARS The new Packard car has made its official bow. It appeared an entirely new car with eight in line motor and ten new body models. It is found to have many new features adding to comfort, safety, performance, and ap- pearance. Moving Van Has Speed Speed has entered into the movement of household goods across the country. Even trucks are making record-break- ing runs. Making only one stop for gas and oil, a truckload of furniture consigned from Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Orlando, Florida, recently negotiated the 1,255 miles between the two cities in 56 hours and 33 minutes the time being officially checked at both points. The average speed was slightly better than 22 miles an hour, and the gasoline con- sumption .was 9.7 miles to the gallon. The moving van, mounted on a two- ton Graham Brothers truck, was in charge of two men who alternated in driving. The route was by way of 962 Pine St. Winnetka RADIO MAINTENANCE Is My Business Six years' practical experience in REPAIR AND CONSTRUCTION A complete line of repair parts and accessories carried at all times. The trip was made without a single mishap to the truck or contents, ac- cording to C. W. Gillman of the Leslie Cartage company, of Ann Arbor, one of the drivers. On reaching Orlando, another load of furniture was picked up for the return journey. Motorized truck transport and im- proved roads have revolutionized methods of quickly and economically transporting merchandise for longer distances, according to officials of Graham Brothers, in commenting on the unusual run.
