No other planting can be used as effectively to landscape the home as the evergreen. In planting the evergreens and land- scaping for effect, the thing to be remembered which is most often for- gotten is that evergreens do grow. While they are a slow-growing plant, so slow-growing that they are sold by feet and inches, they soon take up more room than originally planned for them and must be moved. They need not be pruned more than once a year, in June. During the summer they should be sprayed once every two or three weeks, however, for red spider. They need to be cultivated nearly every week for the best results. The fertilization consists of a mulch of grass clippings and peat and other garden fertilizers worked in as with other shrubs. Among these items of care for the evergreens it should be remembered that they must have plenty of water. When the trees are planted near a house where. overhang- ing eaves protect them from rain, the trees should be watered oftener than the garden flowers. An attractive new garden faucet seen in the shops is a bronze bird which replaces the ordinary handle of a spiggot. | | Fra Tymn OUR BULBS i bring forth flowering plants of | various kinds. "A love for pictures and a more widespread possession of them is de- clared by leading architects to be an influence in planning the American home of today," reads the annual re- port of the American Art bureau, a national organization of publishers of fine prints, under whose direction the annual Feast of Pictures was cele- brated in schools, clubs, and museums October 14 to 20 The development of a cultured leis- ure class, made possible by the large fortunes of the country, is turning its thought to pictures, and is discover- ing the special joy there is in collect- ing them. The taste and interest of these collectors expresses itself in the purchase of color reproductions of masterpieces, original etchings and original oil paintings by artists of good standing. In fact, the purchase of the better class of oil paintings is not today confined to people of wealth; for many of those in moderate circum- stances are now making a practice of buying one after another original work of art. Many clubs now include in their civic activities a committee for the purchase of pictures for school build- ings, and in this way a love of good pictures and familiarity with them is bred in the growing children of the nation. Use of Solid Silver Prevents Tarnishing The proper care of sterling silver is really an easy matter Remember that it is solid; it will not wear off; there- fore, use it as much as possible--no better method of cleaning has ever been found. Flat wear tarnishes less if it is kept in a rack in a dining-room drawer which is well brushed out from time to time. Wash sterling with a cloth in hot soapy water, rinse thornughly in clear hot water, and wipe dry with an ab- sorbent dish towel while the pieces are still warm. Constant nse and washing will effectually prevent tarnish. Sterling properly handled "seldom needs polishing. Onre a month or on a special occasion a quick rubbing with a reliable polishing liquid restores the brilliancy and lustre. Never clean flat silver by boiling with aluminum or soap solution except under definite directions from your jeweler. The popular service plate recently shown is a design made by the silver or copper resist process. The back- ground of silver or bright copper shows the delicate design of leaves. 3 Miles W. of Waukegan Rd.
