October 20, 1928 WINNETKA TALK in Town and Country gd PEL ELLE EEE LLL LL LLL Norshore Will Show "The Patriot" Next; Jannings Has Lead "The Patriot," motion picture in which Emil Jannings plays the part of Paul the First, mad Czar of Russia, will be shown at the Norshore for a week beginning this Saturday. The picture has been praised highly by critics and is said to be one of the best of the year. Once again fear-struck Russia is the background. Silent, watchful ministers, and the subtle intrigues of the royal court pivot about the grotesque figure of the mad ruler, whose life-long fear of sudden death has made a meglo- maniac of him. The picture has been strikingly staged and directed by the brilliant Ernst Lubitsch. Contributory acting, especially that of Lewis Stone, is high- ly satisfactory. On the stage Al Kvale and the Jazz Collegians will perform in a new show entitled "Bag o' Tricks." This was Paul Ash's first show at the Oriental upon his return from the Paramount theater in New York. VITAPHONE OFERETTA John Boles has been selected for the lead in the first vitaphone operetta, "The Desert Song," scheduled to go into production soon. Boles has an excellent singing and speaking voice. Recently he won out in competitive vitaphone tests to find a player to head the cast. "The Water Hole" and "The Whip" at Varsity "The Water Hole," screen version of the novel by Zane Grey, with Jack Holt and Nancy Carroll playing the leading roles, is to be the picture at- traction at the Varsity theater this Saturday. The film sweeps from jest to earnest, telling the story of how, in the deserts of Arizona, a real man shows his worth, and a spoiled and selfish flapper discovers there's some- thing on earth bigger than her self. It starts with a colored prologue in which a caveman shows a f{rivoling lady in a tiger skin just where she gets off, then suddenly moves to a city drawing room, where the lady tells her fiance how her heart thirsts for a man who is not so easy as he. Dorothy Mackaill, Ralph Forbes, Anna Q. Nillsson, and Lowell Sherman head the cast of "The Whip," which is to be shown at the Varsity next Mon- day, Tuesday, and Wednesday. It is a race horse picture, and the scenery of merry old England is one of the charming features about it. Dorothy Mackaill is perhaps the lovliest single factor in it. It is her first independ- ent starring vehicle. The sportsman life of the English gentleman is por- trayed well in this picture, which is carefully staged and directed. "Weary River," a story by Courtland Riley Cooper, has been selected as the next picture in which Richard Barthel- mess will star. Following that he will make "Perversion," screen adaptation of a New York stage play. Community House Shows Two Newspaper Pictures The courage and ingenuity of news- reel cameramen in getting pictures under unusual difficulties is well illus- trated in "The News Parade," the Fox picture featuring Nick Stuart and Sally Phipps, which will be shown at the Community House in Winnetka next Tuesday night, October 23. "Newsreel Nick," assigned the task of photo- graphing Brandon Hurst, portraying a crusty old millionaire, falls in love with the old moneybag's daughter. The story abounds in action, thrills, and ro- mance. William Haines, who has heretofore established himself as a wise-cracking athlete who always learns better in the next to the last reel, has brought to the screen an entirely different type of character in his new production, "Telling the World," which is the Com- munity House attraction for Friday of next week. Haines plays the part of Don Davis, a cub reporter, who un- covers a big murder scoop for his paper, and later, over in Shanghai, un- daunted and unharmed by the whole Chinese army, saves the blonde chorusine he loves so well from being unjustly beheaded. Anita Page, who makes her first appearance on the screen as Haines' leading lady, looks mighty good. SOPHIE WILL HONKY-TONK "Honky-Tonk" is to be the title of the first vitaphone picture to star Sophie Tucker. It will be an all-talk- ing production. a ALABAN & KAT NORSHORE HOWARD AVE": CLARK Every Saturday Deluxe KVALE COO-COO CLUB Matinee at 3:00 P.
