Election Issues Topic of Debates at High School Interest in the mock presidential election to be held at New Trier High school next Tuesday - increased this week as the time of the election ap- proached. Stump speeches boosting the candi- dacy of the Republican and Democra- tic nominees were to be given in the advisor rooms by student speakers during the last three days of pre-elec- tion campaigning. Next Monday morn- ing at a general assembly Prof. A. R. Hatton, head of the political science department of Northwestern univer- sity, will present the issues of both parties impartially, New Trier"s mock election is being sponsored by the history department of the school. Regular polling booths will be stationed in the building and members of the history classes will act as clerks, judges, and challengers to see that the election is properly conducted. The history department of the school is endeavoring to give an authentic representation of the "red tape" and politics involved in elections. FETED IN WASHINGTON The Military attaché of the Spanish embassy, Maj. V. Casajus, entertained informally at tea on October 25, in lis apartment at the Wardman Park hotel in Washington in honor of Mrs. Mel- len C. Martin of 630 Rosewood avenue, Winnetka. Mrs Martin gave a series of "flamenca" dances at the "Evening in Spain" benefit for the students of Porto Rico that same evening at the Wardman Park theatre, and returned to her home in Winnetka last Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. William James Stur- geon of Chicago announce the birth of a son, William James, III, October 26, at the Ravenswood hospital. Mrs. Sturgeon was Nina Lyons, daughter of Mrs. Ida Lyons of Winnetka. Mr. Sturgeon is the son of Mrs. William J. Sturgeon of Evanston, formerly of Wilmette. ---- Mrs. W. A. Wieboldt of Kenilworth is a member of the Woman's auxiliary of the German group working for the Chicago World's Fair, who will attend a luncheon Wednesday, November 7, at the Bismarck hotel. At that time a campaign will be launched for $5 en- rollments for the exposition. Schools Prepare for Mock Ballot on Election Day Pupils of the Hubbard Woods and Skokie schools have been making final plans this week for mock elec- tions to be held by the pupils Tues- day, November 6, the regular Election day. ' At the Skokie school the names of the candidates for president, vice president, United States senator from Illinois, governor of Illinois, member of the state legislature from this dis- trict, and county attorney will appear on the ballots. At the Hubbard Woods school the fourth, fifth, and sixth grade pupils will vote for president, vice-president, and governor of Illi- nois, while the first, second, and third grade pupils will vote for president only. . Political assemblies will be held at both schools prior to the mock elections at which the issues of the campaign will be presented by members of Mrs. Claire Bernhard's current events classes at Skokie school. The politi- cal assembly at Hubbard Woods was to be held yesterday, while the one at Skokie is scheduled for next Mon- day morning at 10 o'clock. Parents are invited to all assemblies. William Edwards to Attend Conference on Abatement Work William Edwards, of Glencoe, super- intendent of the North Shore Mos- quito Abatement district, will represent the district at the annual convention of the Malarial Field Workers at Ashe- ville, N. C., November 12 to 15. De- cision to send Mr. Edwards to the con- vention was made at a meeting of the mosquito abatement district in Wil- mette last Thursday night. The con- vention will be held in connection with the Southern Medical association meeting at Asheville at the same time, and will be attended by men from all parts of the country who are inter- ested in the elimination of the little pest. The convention will be addressed by experts of national reputation. GLEE CLUB CONCERT The Boys' Glee club at the Horace Mann school gave its first public con- cert at the school Thursday. About 18 boys are members of the glee club. Want Election Returns? Here's Spot to Get em The next big event at Community House after Hallowe'en is election night, November 6. A special pro- gram is to be presented from 8 to 12 o'clock that night, having elec- tion returns, stage specialties, and refreshments. All to give everyone a big time. As soon as the dishes are done, mother and dad can slip out for real excitement and keep tab on their favorite candidate. They can hear George Glover and his synco- pators on the stage at Matz hall, see motion pictures, "Slightly Used" and "Home, James," and, during intermissions, have refresh- ments consisting of coffee and doughnuts which will be served in the lobby of Community House. More election returns and the Troubadour Glee club, W. E. H. S. radio artists, will entertain with several numbers. It will be an in- teresting time and Community House is doing its best to provide villagers with the best of entertain- ment. Save Tuesday night, election night, and plan to have some fun with the rest of your neighbors at Community House. Don't forget, refreshments will be here, too!
