It has been truly a campaign, un- usual in every way as national cam- paigns go, with more of personal cleavage regardless of usual party affiliations, deciding each and every citizen as to his choice and at the final moment, his ballot. So much so, in fact, that it evidently appears to most of the world who stand outside of the ropes of our cockpit that the expres- sions of the candidates and their sup- porters have been, as they see it im- partially, more of difference in the language in which most of all this has been couched, than any very great difference at least in the intentioned Americanism proclaimed or aimed at. I believe that the man who has most remarkably carried, all through his speaking campaign, the greatest core of a new human and spiritual idea as to his conception of the functions of government, and that, backed by years of incontestible record of service at private cost to what his fortune might otherwise have reaped from those years of time which never will again return to him, will perhaps never quite derive the full measure of credit that should be his--and Smith partisans and Hoover partisans will probably at the date of this writing, either one of them, claim this as a statement applied to his man. It might not be far wrong in either case, perhaps, and therein lies the security and a new direction given to true liberty-loving government, both as to individual and to personal and business prosperity certain to follow the heat and ardor of this campaign. We can therefore all afford to be very generous and we don't have to stretch pride or go out of our way one way or the other to do so. The tribute I particularly want to pay, therefore, at this time, when the shouting is still two days off and its meaning cannot be misinterpreted, is 100% complimentary, and I feel also, that it takes just such communities as we have along the north shore to pro- duce the sort of thing which is the object of that compliment; not that it makes the least difference as coming from myself but that I think it is due and I am happy to feel I am as proper a person as anyone else to give it. I am free to say first, that it seems to me, that as between the organized publicity of the Republican party as demonstrated in Winnetka, and that of the "Smith-for-President club," the Smiths "have it" by a very great mar- gin, just as they have it in the direc- tories where the Smiths are, as every- one knows, predominant. That was quite a surprise, naturally. But, it was not in the amount of printer's ink and paper used, but in the exceedingly clever manner of its use, week after week, in the magnificent display of lead- ing Citizenship upheld to the bid to take similar position, and what and how these people said it. No matter how one might differ, there was not one of these communications which was not (or should have been) most refreshing to everyone who read at all. The fine manner of it is something to compliment someone upon, commit- tee, group or individual; and my hat is off to that responsible "someone." In expressing myself I am quite sure that anyone who appreciates the chance of executing the best technique they are capable of and are not above seeing the value of the fine job of someone else, will pay tribute with me, be he Hoover as I, Smith or neutral. It was a corking good job! Peter I. Johansen, 158 Bertling lane, Winnetka. One Fatality Recorded on October Contagion List Six cases of scarlet fever were re- ported in Winnetka during October, one of which proved fatal, according to the monthly report of Dr. H. A. Orvis, health officer, submitted to the Village council Wednesday evening. There was one case of whooping cough; two of chicken pox and one of tuberculosis. Dr. Orvis reported that he inspected twenty-five food handling places dur- ing the month, all of which scored above 80. : Four baby clinics were held in Oc- tober, with a total attendance of fifty- eight. 0 797 Elm St. DI RT that you never see Porter's Electric Shop O.
