1 December 15, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 89 JOAN LONDON COMES TO SUNDAY CLUB DEC. 16 Daughter of World-Famous Jack London to Recount "My Story of Jack London" Patrons of the Wilmette Sunday Eve- ning club will have the pleasure of greeting a famous daughter af a fam- ous father Sunday, December 16, when Joan London, daughter of the, late Jack London, gives the address of the evening. Her subject will be, "My Story of Jack London." Milan Lusk, well known north shore violinist, will provide the program of music. Joan London was born in California in January, 1901. She is a cousin on her mother's side of Minnie Maddern Fiske, Emily Stevens, and Merle Mad- dern and as a result of this joint in- heritance showed marked literary and dramatic ability from early childhood. Her talents along both these lines at- tained prominence during her years at the University of California, from which she was graduated in 1921 with a B. A. degree, and a Phi Beta Kappa key. As well as being an author of increasing recognition in her own right, an accomplished and popular lecturer and a literary critic of wide influence, Miss London is also a linguist--having evinced something of her father's in- trepid spirit by giving coaching les- sons in English, French and Italian in order to pay her own expenses through the university. The heritage of a great name, it has been said, is often a. dangerous asset. To Joan London the heritage of fame was a point of departure for the development of her own individuality and genius. To lovers of her world- famous father, Miss L.ondon's introduc- tion to public life as a lecturer was an event of prime importance. Adven- turer and rover, a dynamic force in the literature of his day, Jack London, in addition to his fame, bequeathed to his daughter a unique and very hu- man heritage. So close was the re- lationship between the great man and Horace Mann Pupils Busy Preparing for Christmas Program Horace Mann school children have been busy this week working on a Christmas program to be presented at that school next Friday morning, De- cember 21, at 11 o'clock. The program will portray a Christmas in England during the medieval period, and the children will be dressed in the cos- tumes of that period. They will carry out the old English customs. Symbolic dancing, singing, and presentation of gifts will be on the program. The boys' glee club, dressed as minstrels will sing throughout the entire play. All children in the school, with the exception of those in the kindergarten, will have some part. The two sixth grades are taking the principal parts, since the program fits in with their social science work. Costumes for the Christmas program are being made and dved by the pupils. The children are also making some of the stage properties. Boyd to lieutenant, and Ed Cummings advanced from third sergeant to first sergeant. Patrolman Harold Lewis is officer. relief the little girl that, although he died when she was only 15 years old, Joan London absorbed the outstanding qual- ities of his greatness. A love of all things brave and fine and clean, hatred of pettiness, of sham, of pretense, the qualities that distinguished the father in his life and works, gave wings to the child's development.
