i _- dae adn ata. A tN IE Re ee ie TR SUE oh December 22, 1928 WINNETKA TALK LN Dr. Gault Exhibits Hearing -by-Touch at Washington Display Dr. Robert Gault, professor of psy- chology at Northwestern university, who has done interesting and valuable work in the developing of "hearing" through the finger-tips, was in Wash- ington recently at the invitation of the Carnegie institute, which is now making its annual exhibit of selected current scientific work. The exhibition includes the teletac- tor, the instrument designed and built for Dr. Gault's special uses by the Bell Telephone laboratory of New York City, and also the more im- portant results of his research through its use during the last several years in the Vibro-Tactile laboratory. _ "It is of great interest to workers in several departments of science that the energy of spoken language can be carried from a speaker to the fingers of a group of persons, simultaneously, provided each of them holds in his hand a receiver of the teletactor sys- tem," states Dr. Gault in explaining his work. "Many of the elements of speech, words and whole sentences can thus be distinguished without the aid of hearing. Such is the sensitivity of our organs of touch that they can dis- tinguish intensities of vibration as ac- curately as the ear distinguishes loud- ness. The syllabication and rhythm of speech can be detected and its accent and emphasis can be located by feeling it in the fingers, through the teletactor, more successfully than deaf lip-read- ers can accomplish the same feats by vision. "The discovery of these facts has of scientific work and it points to im- portant applications in relation to the already entailed an enormous amount education of the deaf and hard of hearing. These applications are now being carefully developed." Arthur J. Taylor Named to Board of High School Arthur J. Taylor, 835 Central ave- nue, Wilmette, will succeed the late Leslie F. Gates on the New Trier board of education. Mr. Taylor was chosen at a special election in the township last Saturday. Since he was the only candidate for the position, voting was more or less a formality, and a total of only fifty-two ballots was cast, one of the lightest votes ever recorded in the history of the town- ship. Mr. Taylor's term will extend until April, 1930 New Trier Quints Encounter Morton Entries Tonight New Trier High school cagers will play the Morton High quintets at Cic- ero tonight, Last year Morton came to New Trier and nosed out the home team by a last- minute rally, winning 21 to 20. It was the first defeat New Trier had suffered on its own floor in four years. Morton's school paper says "pros- pects look good." They were good enough to swamp Austin two weeks ago. The lights, scoring at will and substituting freely ran over the ponies, 53 to 18. The heavies also had an easy time, winning 36 to 17. Last Friday however, the Morton ponies, 53 to 18. The heavies also had heavies succumbed to Harrison, 26 to 7. The lights kept their slate clean by winning 22 to 10. For the fourth consecutive year, Illi- nois again leads the states of the union in the construction of hard surfaced roads. About 1,300 miles of paving were laid during 1928. This compares with 1.229 miles in 1924, the previous record. For Better Home Made pa os made of candy!
