December 22, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 47 Purple Cage Team Looms as Finest in Big Ten Circle Victorious in its three pre-holiday games, Northwestern's basketball team will take a much-needed rest until af- ter Christmas when the players will re- port to get in readiness for the Penn State game at Patten gymnasium De- cember 31. Three stiff games with Wabash, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame, all of which were won by the Purple, has given Coach Lonborg a good line on the candidates he will have available for the important conference games yet to come, Capt. Hal Gleichmann, forward, Rut Walter, center, and Frank Marshall, guard, all three members of last year's team, have demonstrated that they have lost none of their old effective- ness. This trio makes a strong nu- cleus to work in two new members who will take the place left vacant by the graduation of Waldo Fisher and Luke Johnsos. Bert Riel, sophomore, and Merrill Munday, member of last year's team, have taken over the forward and guard jobs respectively and are doing a nice job. However, they are being closely pushed by several promising men in- cluding Johnny Haas, forward, Russell Bergherm and Harold Schultz, guards. The latter two played bang up games in the Notre Dame fray when they worked in the places of Hal Gleich- mann and Merrill Mundy, both of whom were ill with the flu. N. U. Athletic Leaders Will Attend Conference K. L. "Tug" Wilson, athletic director, and Prof. O. F. Long, chairman of the faculty committee on athletics, will rep- resent Northwestern at the meeting of the National association of athletic di- rectors and football coaches to be held at New Orleans December 27 and 28. Roy "Pat" Hanley, first assistant foot- ball coach, will represent Head Coach Dick Hanley at the meetings. Coach Hanley will be unable to attend since he has taken the all-eastern football team to San Francisco for the East- West charity game. Following the sessions at New Orleans, Mr. Wilson and Mrs. Wilson will accompany the Knute Rockne tour to Cuba. Offers Medals to Victors in Basketball Tournament The Panthers club of Winnetka is voicing thanks to Abe" Fell, of Fell's Clothiers, for his cooperation in aiding to promote a basketball tournament now being held at the Community House gym. It was through Mr. Fells kindness that the Panthers were able to stage such an event. No sooner had he heard of the Panthers planning such a thing than he promised to do- nate medals for each boy playing on the winning team. Altogether there are four teams in the tournament. The team that comes out on top in this tournament will be decorated with the Fell medals emblematic of victory. Miss Janet Olmsted arrived Wednes- day to spend her Christmas vacation with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Semour H. Olmsted, 783 Foxdale ave- nue.
