Al has pre- pared a huge Christmas frolic, entitled "The Doll Shop." It is going to be a colorful and extraordinary stage show, according to word received this week from the north side theater. Dolores del Rio in "Revenge" will be on the Norshore screen. Miss del Rio gives a vivid performance as the fiery, passionate, ecstatic Rascha, |. who is the bear taming daughter of a bear tamer. She despises all things that are tame and yearns for a man to conquer her own wild self. The men she knows who adore and serve her win only her contempt. The Hero of the picture is Jorga, who rides up on a white horse and ful- fills her wish. LeRoy Mason plays this part. Gypsy camp fires flare in "Revenge." Gypsy dances, gypsy rites, gypsy loves, hates, costumes and customs fill the film with color and movement. The are thown against a background of glorious mountain scenery. Its run will continue through this Saturday, December 29. Those who go to see the picture will find the personality kid, Eddie Quil- lan, amusing. Lina Basquette takes a large share of the honors in this piece. Hers is the role of partner to the vau- deville hoofer who is Mr. Quillan. Robert Armstrong has an appealing part, and Bessie Barriscale puts over some good scenes. "Show Folks" is a good picture. "A triumph of both acting and sound" was one leading Chicago cri- tics' comment on "The Home Town- ers," to be shown at the Varsity next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, December 31, January 1 and 2. A small cast of characters, a good basic situation, worked into a neat plot, amusing, pointed speeches--these are the materials which go into "The Home Towners" and make of it a bright and unusual entertainment. Prize All-Talking Film "The Home Towners" is one of the first stage plays to come to the screen with most of its lines intact. The con- versation in this George M. Cohan play is much better than the bits of dialog which have been inserted into most of the so-called talking pictures merely to give the players something to say in some of the scenes. In this the speech is as important as the action, both in developing the plot and por- traying the characters. Charles Rogers will have the leading male role in "Close Harmony," being screened by Paramount from the story by Elsie Janis. It is a tale of the stage based on experiences recalled by Miss Janis. All characters will talk in "The Canary Murder Case" now being filmed by Paramount. Louise Brooks, James Hall, Jean Arthur, and William Powell are prominent in the cast.
