In an article the North American Review Mr. Charles Waldatein Slade. protseeor of tirt #ne art® fin King's College, Cambridge, endeavors to in terpret the sigaHXttmce of the results of the excavations recently made in the island of Crete by Messrs. Evans and Hogarth. Nothing, Prof. Waldstein thinks, of so striking a nature has been found since the days of Schlle- mann. The material unearthed in Crete belongs to a period as remote as the fifteenth century before Christ, and It gives the impression of a civ ilisation of a very high order: "Peo ple lived in a developed social organ isation, in ease and comfort, nay, in luxury. The various handicrafts and arts were practiced with great variety and proficiency; wood, ivory and metals were carved, turned, beaten, soldered and combined in the most skillful manner; architecture and paintings and architectural sculpture reached a comparatively very high state of perfection, a stage higher than we have evidence of for several centuries succeeding this era. And now, through the most brilliant discov ery of Mr. Evans, we learn that they even possessed the art of writing. For he has found written documents in the Hellenic lands at least seven centuries earlier than the first, known monu ments of historic Greek writing." A WOMAN'S HEART, MM. SftWMl (i. Oyer Telia a Tale of Safferlag* M'Carron, Mich., April 8.--(Special.) --Mrs. Samuel O. Dyer of this place has given the following interesting let ter for publication: "For years I suffered intense pain in the region of the heart. " I doctored with the best physicians. Some of them would relieve me for a short time, but the pain always returned. My heart was so bad that I would have to sit up in bed for hours, to get relief. I would lie awake almost all night. I am 62 years of age, and no one can under stand how much I suffered with this Heart Trouble.; "About a year ago I heard of Dodd's Kidney Pills, and commenced to use them. From the first my condition improved. 'The pain in my heart grad ually grew less, and my general health much better, and now I can say posi tively that I am entirely cured. I can sleep all night, and enjoy almost per fect health. I thank God for the cure that has come to me through the use of Dodd's Kidney Pills. "I have thought long over the matter of giving this letter for publication, and am doing so now without any so licitation whatever, and Bimply be cause I feel it to be my duty to express the profound gratitude I feel for my recovery, and to let others who may be suffering as I was know how they may find a cure. I know that nothing else but Dodd's Kidney Pills cured me, be cause I have taken no other medicine for over a year. I feel better now than I have for many years, and it is all due to the use of Dodd'i Kljiney Pills." Mrs. Dyer's case and Its cure has at tracted a great deal of attention, and her letter is a splendid tribute to the curative properties of Dodd's Kidney Pills. Merv, City of the At 9 o'clock at night another sensa tion, Merv, the "Queen of the World, once a household word in England, thanks to O' Donovan and Marvin and Vambery, as the possible cause of war with Russia, whose absorption of Cen tral Asia brought her here in 1884, Just a year before parliament, at Glad stone's behest, voted £11,000,000 of war money at a sitting in view of Rus sia's next step south. Now the whole oasis of Merv, one of the most fertile spots in the whole world, is as Russian as Riga, and when you say "Merv' in Central Asia, you mean a long, low, neat, stone railway station, lit by a score of bright lamps in a row, where the train changes engines, while in a busy telegraph office a dozen operators sit before their clicking instruments; ^pd if you are a Russian officer or of ficial you mean also a brand new town where a pestilent malarial fever is sure to catch you sooner or later, and very likely to kill you.--Henry Norman in Scribner's. MISSOURlAl ' ' Oi 3 IN EXILE ARB iANIZINQ* , Xwa CIsdha mt t»etseas fn« That fetg State Vonswl In Oatald* Territory, Oss te Cklcaga, the Oth«r la Texas-- HP* Although lasaDnflAtis are found in evsrr Wits in the Union and make up a largt number of the orig inal settlers and prominent citizens of the states west of the Mississippi, they have always been so busy extending their influence and investing their cap ital, possibly, that they have failed to cultivate that state apirlt and fraternal feeling which some other states have manifested to sash a pleasant degree, says the St. Lduis Globe-Democrat. Every man who has left the state has, however, deep in heart a warm spot for "old Missouri," and it waB only necessary for some one to take the initiative in order that the Missouri club might hold its own with other kindred organisations. There are at preaent only two Missouri clubs, one formed recently in Chicago, and the Missouri association of Texas, a still younger society, with headquarters at Dallas, but both of these promise to become flourishing organizations, and the pioneers in the movement are in dulging in great expectations in regard to the World's Fair. It is confidently expected that by that time nearly every state in the Union will have its Missouri club. The Missouri club of Chicago was organized November 12, and started with a membership of fifty, most of whom are well-known business and professional men of Chi cago. The club rooms are In the West ern Union building, where business meetings will be held, social affairs being enjoyed at the Grand Pacific hotel. The club will have a ladies' auxiliary, the object being to promote sociability among ex-Missourians. Dr. Coleman G. Buford was elected presi dent Dr. Buford ia a physician whs began practicing in Chicago in 1896. He was born in Lafayette county, Mis- - souri, in 1872, receiving his early training in the Wentworth Military academy at Wentworth, Mo. He was graduated from the Northwestern Medi cal college of Chicago in 1894. He spent two years of practical work in the Insane asylum at Kankakee, after ward studying surgery under Dr. Christian Fenger for three years. He has since 1896 been instructor of sur gery in the Northwestern Medical school at Chicago, The Missouri So ciety of Texas was recently formed at Dallas, Tex., the purpose being to promote fraternal association and good fellowship among the ex-Missourians of Texas. All persons who are now residing in Dallas who formerly lived in Missouri, and members of their fam ilies, are eligible to membership. Thomas D. Miller, manager of the Dal las Gas and Fuel company, is presi dent; Dr. A. M. Elmore, a prominent physician, is vice-president; H. L. 8. KnifTen, a wholesale coal, grain and lumber dealer, is treasurer, and Thom as B. Love, of the law firm of Moroney ft Jx>ve, is secretary. The directors are Judge E. B. Perkins, general attorney of the St. Louis and Southwestern railroad of Texas; Hugh N. Fitzgerald, managing editor of the Dallas News; Dudley G. Wooten, a prominent law yer, and J. W. Maxwell, general sup erintendent of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railway, of Texas. All these gentlemen live in Dallas, and those from Austin are Hon. Joe Lee Jameson, state revenue agent, and Hon. J. S. Kendall, state superintend ent of public instruction; Paul Waples, a wholesale grocer at Fort Worth; R. V. Bowden, a lawyer of El Paso; Judge J. A. L. Wolfe, a lawyer of Sherman, and William C. Cloyd, of the Rusk Journal, of Rusk, and other members^ The society proposes to co-operate in every way to promote the best possible representation of the interests and re sources of Texas at the St. Louis World's Fair, and will endeavor to procure the governor of Missouri and his staff, the state officers and promi nent Missourians. The association is carrying out a systematic plan by which they hope to enroll as members every ex-Missourian now living in the Lone Star state. To OMalw a Patent. He ia the Rev. Leon C. Hills, a graduate of Princeton Theo logical Seminary, and the school waa established through the munificence of H. B. Sillman of New York city, who gave 110,000 for the purpose. A two-story school building Is now ha* tng built, the first story of stone and the second of some kind of hard wood, and not bamboo, which the natives use for almost every sort of building. The roof ia to he of metal. Besides the school building there will be a small chapel (Presbyterian) and a manual training school building, where little Filipinos are to be taught carpenter ing, iron working, etc. A hundred acres of land have been purchased on which to teach the youngsters agricul ture. The city of Dumanguete was selected because of the friendly atti tude of the natives toward Ameri cana. Batterfty's Wloffs. The slow flapping of a butterfly's wings, according to Sir John Lubbock, produces no sound, but when the move ments are rapid a noise is produced which increases in shrillness with the number of vibrations. Thus the house fly, which produces the sound P, vi brates its wings 21,120 times a minute, and the bee, which makes a sound of A, as many as 26,400 times. Prof. Nar- cy, the naturalist, succeeded by a deli cate mechanism in confirming these numbers graphically. -He fixed a fly so that the tip of the wine just touched a cylinder which was moved by clock work.
