The past week has generally been very favorable for the growth of yege- tation and quite favorable for farm work. The weather was quite cool early in the week and light frosts oc curred in some localities. No material damage resulted from these, however. The latter part of the week was warm. Generally fair weather prevailed dur ing the first part of the week, but good rains fell over practically the entire state the latter part, and the soil is now in good condition ad regards moisture. In a few localities more rain is needed, while in a few others the ground is too wet. The dry weather which prevailed early in the week dried out the soil so that work in the fields was general, though in many places cultivation had been delayed until fields were quite weedy. Work was again interrupted to some extent by the rains the latter part of the week. As a result of the favorable conditions crops generally, but especially in the southern district, have continued to improve. Wheat and rye continue in promising condition over the northern and central districts and wheat is improving in the southern district. A few correspondents report slight damage by rust and Hessian fly. The condition of oats has continued to improve and the crop 1b generally good throughout the state. In some locali ties they have begun to head. Corn has done well during the week, though the cool wfeather retarded its growth some what and caused it to look a little yel low in some places, and the outlook for this crop is now excellent Practically the entire crop is now in the ground. Hla Last Hope Realized. (From the Sentinel, Gebo, Mont.) In the first opening of Oklahoma to settlers in 1889, the editor of this paper was among the mamy seekers after fortune who made a big race one fine day in April. During his traveling about and afterwards his camping upon his claim, he encountered much bad water, which together with the severe heat, gave him a very severe diarrhoea which it seemed almost impossible to check, and along in June the case be came so bad he expected to die. One day one of his neighbors brought him one small bottle of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhbea Remedy as a last hope. A big dose was given him while he was rolling about on the ground in great agony, and in a few minutes the dose was repeated. The good effect of the tnedicine was soon noticed and within an hour the patient was taking his first sound sleep for a fortnight. That one little bottle worked a complete cure, and he cannot help but feel grateful. The season for bowel disorders being at hand suggests this item. For sale by all druggists. The Annihilation of Distance; How much nearer to each other the nations of the world seem to be to-day and really are to-day than was the case a few decades ago. When weeks and months were required for communica tions between the United States and Europe the countries of the old world appeared to be a long way off. Now the circumference of old earth is belted with telegraphic and cable lines in every possible direction. What hap pens to-day in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, South America and the great islands of the sea is made known to us tomorrow by great newspapers like The Chicago Record-Herald, whose foreign correspondents are located in every im portant city in the world outside of the United States. In addition to its own staff correspondents The Record-Herald enjoys the foreign news service of the New York Herald, famous for many years for the reliability of its foreign news, and also of that great co-operat- ive news gathering organization, the Associated Press. No other daily news paper in America possesses facilities so varied and extensive for covering the news of all nations. INNOVATION IN CALL8. fiw£ CaRDuI/ Virulent Cancer Cured. Startling proof of a wonderful ad vance in medicine is given by druggist G. W. Roberts of Elizabeth, W. Va. An old man there had long suffering with what good doctors pronounced in curable cancer. They believed his case hopeless till he used Electric Bitters and applied Bucklen's Arnica Salve, which treatment completely cured him. When Electric Bitters are used to expel bilious, kidney and microbe poitons at the same time this salve exerts its matchless healing power, blood diseases, skin eruptions, ulcers and sores vanish. Spring fever is another name for billiousness. It is more serious than most people think. A torpid liver and inactive bowels mean a poisoned system. If neglected, serious illness may follow such symptoms. DeWitt's Little Early Risers remove all danger by stimulating the liver, opening the bowels and cleansing the spstem of impurities. Safe pills. Never gripe. "I have taken De Witt's Little Early Risers for torpid liver every spring for years," wiites R. M. Everly, Moundsville, W. Va. "They do me more good than anything I have ever tried." The thirty-sixth annual picnic of the early settlers of the Fox River valley and vicinity will be held at Lord's Park, Elgin, I1L, on Saturday, ^une 14. Everyone is invited to attend. Short reminiscences of "ye olden times," interspersed with instrumental music, will be the entertaining features. A Real Friend. "I suffered from dispepsia and in digestion for fifteen years," says W. T. Sturdevant of Merry Oaks, N. C. ' 'After I had tried many doctors and medicines to no avail one of my friends persuadM me to try Kodol. It gave immediate relief. I can eat almost any thing I want now and my digestion is i*ood. I cheerfully recommend Kodol." Don't try to cure stomach trouble by dieting. That only further weakens the system. You need wholesome, strengthening food. Kodol enables you to assimilate what yon eat by digesting it without the stomach's aid. Julia A. A. Story,. McHenry; G. W. Besley, West McHenry. Attention, Horse Owners! Something Wliieh Will be Hailed With &oy by Society Women. The fashion of making a round of calls has always been a tax upon tbe society women. Therefore any delicate way out of it will be hailed with joy, and the latest is "calling" by telephone. "Formal calls," said a society woman, "are becoming obsolete. I mean the running in of an afternoon, chatting for five or ten minutes, leaving your cards, rushing off to the next place on yonr list, and then expecting these women to do the same thing to you, and praying you may be out when they call. That sort of thing is growing beautifully less, and I think the telephone is largely re sponsible for it. I make nearly all my calls now over the 'phone. It is BO much more comfortable and saves such a lot of time and bother. I just sit down in my own home and call up Mrs. Smith in her home. I owe her a call. If she is in, she comes to the 'phone, and, although I may have nothing in pnrticular to talk about, we chatter away for several minutes, and ljefore I ring off I impress upon her the fact that I am returning her call and that she needn't expect me to come in person. She laughs and thinks it's all right, and then pays some of the calls she owes in the same way. It really does away with a great nuisance. Officials of the Chicago Telephone Company inform us that quite a num ber of women have already adopted this plan of returning calls and that the de mand for residence telephones has in creased twenty per cent in the past month. Saved From an awful Fate. "Everybody said I had consumption," writes Mrs. A. M. Shields, of Chambers- burg, Pa.,' 'I was so low after six months of severe sickness, caused by Hay Fever and Asthma, that few thought I could get well, but I learned of the marvelous merit of Dr. King s New Discovery for Consumption, used it, and was com pletely cured."
